Logan International Airport is facing a $17 million cash crunch as it copes with the fallout from the airline industry’s financial woes.

Two airlines skipped payments before flying into bankruptcy, gates are sitting unexpectedly empty and airlines are flying fewer planes, taking a huge bite out of landing fees.

Massachusetts Port Authority officials are working to get much of the money back, but for now, they’re slashing expenses and looking to beef up concessions, which has been one of the few bright spots this year.

The number of passengers is up and so is the amount they’re spending on doughnuts, T-shirts and frozen lobsters. Massport has collected 15 percent more on concessions than last year.

While airport officials fix the deficit on their operating budget, they’re looking to beef up the per-passenger fee to $4.50 per flight — from $3 — later this year to help fund a $4.6 billion five-year capital budget approved yesterday. That money can’t be used for day-to-day expenses.
