Well Tony Taliban has finally found a replacement for Avborne. The AJC is reporting the 88 Heavy Checks will be going to Aeromexico. They will be sending some CFM-56 and apu overhauls to ATL.

I'm not really suprized at this move. AM did a lot of the insulation replacement AD's a few years ago for us. At that time many of us working the 88 heavy check line in ATL saw that as a foot in the door. We were expecting them to get the work right out of the gate, but then they picked Avborne. There was a rumor that DL inspection at the time wasn't comfortable with AM and may have even made a call to the FAA about some things they saw down there.

I'm sure the media types like Lou Dobbs will have a field day with this announcement.

I am sorry to see this work go overseas. Delta a/c maintenance belongs to Delta AMTs!

while I sympathize with you, should AeroMexico keep their engines down in Mexico? Or is it better than DL mechanics have something to do rather than the previous arrangement that saw work only go offshore with nothing in return?

How is it that AM AMTs can do airframe overhaul work better/quicker/cheaper than Delta AMTs and Delta AMTs can do engine overhaul work better/quicker/cheaper than AM AMTs?

It is in part how bean counters move the beans around in my opinion.

Didn't Delta send widebody overhaul to Air Canada and then Air Canada sent a Air Canada widebody to AA for overhaul?

It's about core competencies. And, of course, the lowest bidders too. But this happens in many industries, where portions of work are farmed out or outsourced. Think of a general contractor that needs work, he's going to bid lower and then take a smaller margin on a given job, especially if it's one that he and his team excells at and can do quicker and better than his counterpart. But he may have something in his own house, that he doesn't specialize in that would be better/quicker/cheaper to hire another contractor for. Same principle.

The engine work requires less labor. Most of the cost savings is in the parts and efficencies of a large operation.
