Mechanics Propose IAM Concessions

Approximately two weeks ago in federally-mediated negotiations with Northwest Airlines, AMFA agreed with the company’s target of reaching a total of $1.1 billion in concessions from all its unions.

However, they did not agree on the proposed allocation of concessions, which Northwest based on each group’s relative position in the industry. The Mechanics representatives made their own allocation proposal to Northwest management which would require IAM members to subsidize a smaller sacrifice from the Mechanics. For District 143 members, the Mechanic proposal would more than double what Northwest is seeking.

A comparison of what Northwest is seeking to what the Mechanic representatives are offering for you to sacrifice is below

IAM
$107 million per year NWA Proposal
$256 million per year AMFA Proposal

AMFA
$176 million per year NWA Proposal
$156 million per year AMFA Proposal

Your IAM Negotiating Committee has not agreed with Northwest’s concessions target, and we will never subsidize another employee group. Our negotiations with Northwest are difficult enough without the uninvited interference of the Mechanic representatives.

The IAM will not allow the Mechanics to derail our negotiations the way they have their own

Why Not?

At AA, the Maintenance & Related took a bigger cut in the concession pie because the Ramp was the first to agree to a smaller bite than originally requested. AA and the TWU agreed to bonus the ramp for being first setting the stage for the following collapse of the rest of the TWU.

Sounds like another iam ploy in concert with NWA management to cause more hate and discontent at NWA with unfounded rumors. Of course this is a union that has willingly crossed several picket lines in the past, so nothing they do really surprises anyone.

Ok, flame on....

At no point have I seen or heard anyone from AMFA suggest that the IAM members at NWA take a deeper pay cut, or mention the IAM at all for that matter.

Considering that NWA has already given the IAM the dollar amount they expect from the IAM members at NWA, and has not mentioned (publicly at least) that they expect more than that number, the IAM's assumption that they will somehow be expected to 'cover' the difference is surprising.

The only ones suggesting that so far are the IAM.

Contrary to the IAM assertion above, AMFA has not agreed with NWA on the total amount of concessions NWA feels are necessary because that is between NWA and the other unions. AMFA has agreed only that concessions are necessary. The core of the current AMFA/NWA disagreement is over the amount necessary for the mechanics, and, unlike the pilots and now the IAM, AMFA has not attempted to either negotiate for or influence the negotiations of the other unions at NWA.

Looks like the IAM is looking for another good excuse to cross another picket line. They are so predictable and such a toy for management.

Apparently the IAM forgot what the word "negotiation" means.

The company put forth a figure for concessions that they wanted, the IAM met that figure, however AMFA felt the figure was excessive especially since the company already hit the mechanics harder than other workers as far as layoffs. The IAM is pissed because they feel that the company will now expect them to give more, well thats their choice.

Maybe what the IAM should consider telling the company what it takes to support a family, break it down to an hourly wage and present it to NWA, however that might be considered too militant for the "fighting" machinists.

Too bad they only want to fight other unions who dont want to roll over instead of fighting greedy dishonest companies like they used to.

RTB,

A comparison of what Northwest is seeking to what the Mechanic representatives are offering for you to sacrifice is below

$107 million per year NWA Proposal
$256 million per year AMFA Proposal

AMFA
$176 million per year NWA Proposal

So how does a supposed $20 million less from AMFA equate to $149 million more from the IAM?

Something doesnt smell right with any of this.

The iam is a company scam. They are the same at all the airlines where there are dues paying members. The only thing they provide is a place to throw good money away. You get ZERO for it!! They have no real labor agenda except to have more dues payers to support their worthless confrence's. I have yet to see any benefit from them in 18 years. The iam only represents the iam, not the membership. They are a worthless bunch!! The End

I know AMFA represents the mechanics at NW, but who exactly does the IAM represent in the NW group?
