As we exchange good wishes I'm reminded of those who won't be home for the Holidays. All of the posters on the US Airways Forum have or know someone who is far away in the service of their country. Keep them in your heart and prayers.
For me this time of year is a time to both honor and remember my Uncle and to thank him for his service to his country. Christmas Day, 1944 found PVC Kenneth W Johnson, 3rd Army, 90th Division, 357th Infantry Battalion commanded by General George Patton was racing toward Bastogne to break the siege. The troops in Bastogne nearly froze to death without winter gear. In the museum there is a picture of a striking Belgian women handing two GI's a half dozen white bed sheets which they cut a hole in to stick their heads through and wrapping their ammo belts around them they now had camouflage from the harsh winter snow that blanketed the countryside
When you go to Bastogne as I did on the 60th anniversary in 2004 you'll see EVERY business with a 4' x 6' Belgian and US flag, one on either side to the door. then the center of town has a fully restored an operable Sherman Tank. Plus the town square has been renamed McAuliffe Square after the general who commanded the 101 Airborne during the siege. I have never been so proud of a family member as I was that day.
So here is to everyone's own "Uncle Ken" out there. May God keep them safe and sound until they return home. May they remind each of us that Freedom is never free. No one asked them to, yet they said "I got the tab this time"
