Southwest Airlines Spreads More Love Across the Country; Carrier Announces New Flights
Tuesday May 4, 1:35 pm ET

DALLAS, May 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- With the addition of three new Boeing aircraft in August, Southwest (NYSE: LUV - News) will add new daily nonstop service each way between the following cities beginning August 8, 2004:

* One flight between Las Vegas and Islip (Long Island's MacArthur Airport)
* One flight between Las Vegas and Cleveland * One flight between Phoenix and Cleveland

"Southwest is simply meeting the demand for service between all of these cities," said Joyce Rogge, senior vice president of marketing for Southwest. "We continue to listen to what our Customers want, and over the last several years, we have moved quickly to meet those needs. They asked for a smoother airport experience -- we added automated boarding passes, advance checkin via southwest.com, and earlier checkin availability. They asked for service to more cities -- we will begin service to Philadelphia with one wave of 14 flights beginning on May 9 and add 14 more flights in July."

Customers can take advantage of Southwest's regular low fares and even lower advance purchase fares on these flights by booking now on southwest.com. For example, fares are as low as $99 each way, based on roundtrip purchase, for nonstop flights between Las Vegas and Islip (Long Island's MacArthur Airport), Las Vegas and Cleveland, and Phoenix and Cleveland.

"This added service also provides Cleveland travelers the opportunity to make easy and frequent connections to all of our west coast destinations from Phoenix; and our Islip Customers can now reach the West Coast with just one short stop in Las Vegas," continued Rogge. "It also allows us to further increase our service levels into and out of Las Vegas, which is an extremely popular destination for business and leisure Customers."

Interesting. SWA hasn't had any new flights at CLE in a long time, and this is the first long-haul flight from ISP. Expect more flights at ISP since the new terminal opens soon, probably later this month.

This is great news for ISP!!! The ISP-LAS flight will be the first long haul flight (2,000 Miles Plus) in its history. Since LAS is further than PHX from ISP, Look for PHX to be added also soon.

Not announced in this press release, but already loaded into the new schedule is a bunch of new Sat. nonstop flights. I have found 4 that begin in Sept, but there may be others.

PHL-OAK
PHL-SAN
PVD-FLL
PVD-LAS

Also noticed a 5th PVD-MCO flight on Sat begins this fall.

PVD -- Saturday Service

BWI - 11
MDW - 3
FLL - 1
MCI - 1
LAS - 1
BNA - 2
MCO - 5
PHL - 4
PHX - 2
TPA - 3

Actually isnt Baltimore - San Jose, CA longer? Thats around 2,300 miles Flight 1072 I believe and nonstop service.

That's great news but with 7000 feet on runway at ISP that dosen't leave much room for error or possibly weight restricted with all that fuel. That's a long way to go with a 7000 foot runway. Just wondering.

With the addition of winglets and 2000 lbs of rated thrust per engine it has changed our performance on our 700's greatly.

I looked up some numbers for ISP runway 6/24 on our performance computers using -700 that had only winglets, only added thrust, & both winglets & added thrust. Just adding the winglets added 5000 lbs to the max takeoff weight. Just using the added thrust added 8000 lbs to the max takeoff weight. Using both winglets & added thrust added only 10,000 lbs to the max takeoff weight because the new max takeoff weight was the maximum takeoff weight for the -700.

Thanks, Tanker! That confirms that SWA doesn't need a longer runway at ISP or PVD to fly non-stop to the west coast if they choose.

If anyone else is interested, you can get graphs from the Boeing website that show performance for the various 737 models with and without winglets and for different engine options. If you go to this link , scroll down a little to the heading "737-700/800/900--With Winglets Document D6-58325-5 (REV A, Sept 2003)" and click on the link that says "3.0 Airplane Performance", you can get the takeoff performance for SWA's aircraft. It shows that at sea level, for a 737-700 with winglets and 24,200 lb thrust engines, the takeoff runway length required is about 6,200 feet. That's for a plane at maximum design takeoff weight and under worst-case environmental conditions (about 100 degrees F and a wet runway).

I can just image when the new ISP Terminal is fully open, longer range flights will most likely be coming along. Since ISP-BWI all ready has 9 flights /day, ISP-MCO has 3 flights/day, the only place I see left to tap is the west. LAS, PHX, HOU, LAX and OAK. I can’t wait to see!

🙁 I'm disappointed. As a loyal WN customer flying out of ALB, I was hoping to see ALB-MDW service sometime soon. 🙁

With Jetblue starting to link more of the West Coast with the East Coast, I think the SWA should bring in some more non-stops off the West Coast where they have the loyalty right now. Examples would be SMF-BWI, OAK-BWI, SAN-MHT, SEA-FLL, LAS-PVD, and LAX-ISP. More coast-to-coast needs to come in soon. With the -700 engines being upgraded in thrust, that should allow almost any city pair in the system. If Aloha can do BUR-HNL in a non-winglet -700 with the engine thrust that SWA will soon have in their -700's, then there is no excuse. Just my thoughts.......

OAK-BWI is currently a Sat-only flight. Seem to recall reading on here that it is in the pipeline to go daily later in the year.
