What's new

No American to Newcastle

has there been a company press release to that effect?

I went to the Newcastle airport website and this was all I could find. No press release stating the service wouldn't happen.

American Airlines at Newcastle International

In July, American Airlines announced a new route to New York, operating twice daily.

The flights, commencing in May 2006, will run between Newcastle International and New York JFK.

With the start up of money losing flights at DAL, I guess we cant afford to keep flying other money losing flights such as these.

Well, sucks for JFK flying. American too, of course.

Why do we keep announcing routes and cancelling them? Who is the PR moron in charge of these things? We look more and more foolish everyday.

You treat it like AA is the only airline that does it. They aren't. All airlines do it. Air Canada, in particular, is the most famous for this practice. Unfortunatley, the yields were not there, and AA's marketing studies came to wrong conclusions. Would you rather that AA just start the service and lose money anyway?

Newcastle have told AA they won't be welcome back! A lot of messing around went on i think, apparently the airport had spent a considerable amount of money promoting the start up.

NO, I don't wish we started and lost money. I wish we would get the right people to do the marketing studies in the first place before we make announcements about new routes that we aren't going to fly. Time to get some new consultants.

Even the lower level managers don't believe anything coming out of the top level these days. When we found out about the new 757 routes we were planning on we were pretty much told not to hold our breath and that we could believe it when we see it on the bid sheet.

It's the same reason why we don't believe there will be no call backs. They say one thing and do another.

I could post a timeline of AA BS but why bother?

If I seem angry it is because I am going to be on reserve the rest of my life and nobody seems to be doing anything to expand the airline so that we can call people back and hire people. And there aren't any changes being made to the reserve system to make it more bearable for the thousands of us who have to serve it.

Skymess, I have been on reserve for 15 years, what are you up to?

Welcome to the seniority system...

I'm sure there are a couple hundred ex-TW FA's who wouldn't mind taking your place on reserve at this point.

What is the average hours you're getting on reserve? Do you have any control on flying past guarantee?

9 years. I wouldn't even care too much about being on reserve if we had a little more flexibility. I have worked at other airlines where reserve wasn't such a hardship.
I would approve of side letters of agreement that involved changes to reserve.

There is no average. One month I am flying 85 scheduled and 99 pay projected (because deadheads don't count towards maxing out) and another month I have 50 hours. It's a 75 hour guarantee but they are allowed to fly you up to 85 hours.

Murphy's/AA's Law makes sure that FA's who want to fly, or need to fly, get no hours. The ones with the babies at home get 4 day trips. If you need to fly past guarantee the FA's have the option to pick up trips from lineholders on their days off. The problem with that is that you are working on days off that you really need and the trips don't count toward your max out.

It is the way they do it that I object to. The last two reserve months I don't get trips at 7pm during the call in time and I am told I am number 1 out of however many reserves. So, I can't sleep and they call me in the middle of the night for an o' dark hundred turn. The next night, and the one after that, it's the same story. Just when I figure I am on the morning schedule and start waking up at 5 am they don't call me until 8pm for a 2230 sign in.
We write preferences that say JFK and we get Newark. You say you want a layover and they give you a turn. It would be funny if it didn't feel like you were beaten with a bat and run over by a Peterbilt.
