"Pittsburgh International Airport is on a short list of airports that Northwest Airlines and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines are considering for nonstop service to Amsterdam, the Regional Air Service Partnership said Thursday." That's from the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, which says the Pittsburgh-focused group is lobbying airlines to bring trans-Atlantic service back to that city. Pittsburgh lost its last trans-Atlantic route in 2004, when US Airways discontinued Frankfurt service as part of its downsizing there, according to Pittsburgh Business Times (free registration). Restoring such a link has been a priority for local officials.

I wonder if NW/KLM will be required to pay the same airport fees that USAirways had to?

My guess is that PIT is offering subsidies that will guarantee NW/KLM a profitable route, money that they would have never even considered giving to USAirways.

NWA used to have an Amsterdam flight out of PHL, anyone know if this will still be the case or when this had stopped?

The PHL AMS flight was halted around 01. (sic)

There is zero truth to NW being interested in US. It simply doesn't fit it's plan. If NW enters a M/A it will be worth the headache of merging two cultures.(global coverage, to match our Pacific/European Divisions)

PHL is When, PIT is IF. NW has looked at restarting PHL for the last 2 years and is just waiting for the best time to do it. IF PIT can come up with better incentives than it's other Short List competitors it may get the route. Obviously that would need to include a lower landing/gate fee structure for some period. PHL does not require any incentives to get the service, but will need to provide international facility access - which is scarce.
