Just like President Obama took his plan for Iraq, his bailout plans, and more now he’s trying to market his “plan†for closing Gitmo…straight from George W Bush’s Sept 6, 2006 speech. Time heals all wounds, and I guess 3yrs is enough time for the Democrats to forget they once opposed this plan.

OBAMA’s PLAN:(quotes below)
1) Try criminals in Federal courts
2) Military Tribunals
3) Release ones ordered released by courts
4) Transfer as many as possible to other countries
5) Hold really bad guys until we can figure out how to hold them w out trial indefinitely by legal means

BUSH’S Sept 6, 2006 PLAN: (quotes below)
1) Transfer as many as possible to other countries
2) Try criminals in Federal courts
3) Military Tribunals
4) Beg Congress to figure out how to hold the really bad guys without trial indefinitely by legal means
[note: President Bush’s plan didn’t include a provision for letting go Gitmo detainees who had been ordered released, but had yet to be released. This is because no one would take them, and they remain at Gitmo, but President Obama has said that somehow, someplace he wants them released.

OBAMA:
“First, when feasible, we will try those who have violated American criminal laws in federal courts - courts provided for by the United States Constitution.â€

“The second category of cases involves detainees who violate the laws of war and are best tried through Military Commissions. Military commissions have a history in the United States dating back to George Washington and the Revolutionary War.â€

“The third category of detainees includes those who we have been ordered released by the courts.â€

“The fourth category of cases involves detainees who we have determined can be transferred safely to another country.â€

“I want to be honest: this is the toughest issue we will face. We are going to exhaust every avenue that we have to prosecute those at Guantanamo who pose a danger to our country. But even when this process is complete, there may be a number of people who cannot be prosecuted for past crimes, but who nonetheless pose a threat to the security of the United States. Examples of that threat include people who have received extensive explosives training at al Qaeda training camps, commanded Taliban troops in battle, expressed their allegiance to Osama bin Laden, or otherwise made it clear that they want to kill Americans. These are people who, in effect, remain at war with the United States.

As I said, I am not going to release individuals who endanger the American people. Al Qaeda terrorists and their affiliates are at war with the United States, and those that we capture - like other prisoners of war - must be prevented from attacking us again. However, we must recognize that these detention policies cannot be unbounded. That is why my Administration has begun to reshape these standards to ensure they are in line with the rule of law. We must have clear, defensible and lawful standards for those who fall in this category. “

BUSH’S PLAN:
“The CIA program has detained only a limited number of terrorists at any given time — and once we’ve determined that the terrorists held by the CIA have little or no additional intelligence value, many of them have been returned to their home countries for prosecution or detention by their governments.â€

“Others have been accused of terrible crimes against the American people, and we have a duty to bring those responsible for these crimes to justice. So we intend to prosecute these men, as appropriate, for their crimes.â€

“Soon after the war on terror began, I authorized a system of military commissions to try foreign terrorists accused of war crimes. Military commissions have been used by Presidents from George Washington to Franklin Roosevelt to prosecute war criminals, because the rules for trying enemy combatants in a time of conflict must be different from those for trying common criminals or members of our own military.â€

“So today, I’m asking Congress to pass legislation that will clarify the rules for our personnel fighting the war on terror. “

Better then that, President Obama left the impression yesterday that Supermax prisons are ready, willing, and able to house Gitmo detainees.

Supermax officials in Colorado say otherwise:

to Colorado’s Supermax would require either shuffling current residents out of the Florence prison or expanding its capacity and resolving a long-running battle over adequate prison staffing.

As President Barack Obama and congressional leaders point toward the Colorado federal prison as a possible new home for some of the detainees, one big problem is the bed-space crunch.

Supermax’s approximately 480 concrete cells already are jammed with the likes of Oklahoma City bombing co-conspirator Terry Nichols, Atlanta Olympics bomber Eric Rudolph and other notorious domestic criminals. There also are 33 international terrorists, including Sept. 11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui, 1993 World Trade Center bombing mastermind Ramzi Yousef and failed airline shoe bomber Richard Reid.

Only one bed was not filled Thursday at Supermax, U.S. Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Tracy Billingsley said.

So getting any more than a handful of detainees from Guantanamo to Florence would require considerable logistical maneuvers to clear room or an even longer-term solution through prison expansion.

The first step, according to the head of the union representing correctional officers, would be to increase staffing at Supermax.

“There’s a whole contingent of issues that have to be well thought out before we ever agreed to bring inmates of that caliber into our system,â€￾ said Bryan Lowry, president of the National Council of Prison Locals, which represents federal correctional officers.

Doh!

Here is the part of the article you failed to quote:

However, freshman U.S. Rep. Jared Polis on Thursday took a different approach.

"Coloradans, like every American, want to keep these people from causing harm. We want to keep them locked up with no chance of escape. We want to put them in the best facility for that purpose," Polis said.

"If (Supermax) is the best facility for the purpose of the country, then that's where we should lock them up."

Polis' position actually comes closest to echoing that of many locals surrounding the prison.

Congress and Obama certainly must hash out how transfers from Guantanamo would fit with U.S. judicial principles, Fremont County Commissioner Ed Norden said.

"If (suspected terrorists) are adjudicated and convicted, then, yeah, I think (Supermax) is an appropriate place," Norden said.

Most states don't want them.

They got it aced in Gitmo as far as being locked up.

Super max would be a good place for us to put them so they can indoctrinate all our inmates into radical islamic fundementalism.....

Yeah...that's the ticket.

If they send them to the supermax prison like the one in Colorado they won't get the opportunity to indoctrinate anyone. They will be in a cell 23 hours a day with no contact with other inmates. Gitmo is an all expenses paid vacation compared to that.

Until the bleeding heart liberals and ACLU fight to give them more rights, prayers, etc. Its inevitable.

The ACLU only seeks to ensure every ones civil liberties. In order to be successful in a lawsuit against a "Supermax" facility, there would have to be ample evidence that Muslim prisoners were NOT receiving the same spiritual guidance as members of other religions incarcerated in that specific facility.

The above is part of the reason the Bush Regime decided to keep them off of US soil. If we bring them to the USA then we have to treat them fairly and equally. For some that presents a problem.

The situation would have worked out better if the folks at GitMo had been "Shot while trying to escape" while still in Iraq of Afghanistan. Prisoners in this type of combat are most inconvenient.

You make a point, but theres no end to their madness. Give them an inch, they will take a mile.

The religious rights of prisoners are limited in the United States:

Prison officials must afford prisoners opportunities to exercise their religious freedom. Prison regulations interfering with an inmate's free exercise of religion are subject only to the requirement that they be "reasonably related to legitimate penological interests." Impediments to a prisoner's right of free exercise may be constitutional if: (1) the regulation is rationally related to legitimate concerns of rehabilitation, institutional order, and security; (2) no ready alternatives to the regulation exist; (3) prisoners retain some freedom of religious expression in alternative ways; and (4) accommodation of prisoners' practices would require extra supervision, threaten prison security, and create perceptions of favoritism. A prisoner asserting his or her right of religious liberty must establish that his or her beliefs are sincere and religious in nature. The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment further protects prisoners from forced participation in religious activities.

The talking points are just that. They are not supported by facts and or the law.

I know that, but do you think they will really care?
Theres a lot of similarities to the bleeding hearts here and in the UK. All they have to do is create a stink, slap civil rights on the end of it and you have people crying foul all around them and champion their cause. It happens here all the time, just look around you. Look at gitmo for christ sake...
