ISTANBUL (AFP)--Oneworld, one of three global airline alliances, that includes British Airways PLC (BAIRY) and Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. (CPCAY), said Monday its members were considering buying fuel collectively.

Oneworld representative John McCulloh said a proposal to buy fuel together to save on costs was to be considered at a meeting next week.

McCulloh, speaking at the general meeting of airline industry body IATA, said fuel producers had clubbed together and collective bargaining by airlines could lead to savings.

Oneworld includes British Airways, AMR Corp.'s (AMR) American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Finnair Oyj (FIA1S.HE), Iberia Lineas Aereas De Espana (IBLA.MC), LAN Airlines (LAN.SN), Qantas Airways Ltd. (QAN.AU), Japan Airlines Corp. (9205.TO), Royal Jordanian and Malev.

McCulloh conceded some members were reticent about the idea without naming them.

Now . . . . who could that be?

In theory this sounds good, but in reality this is just another scam for rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer.

I remember last year Branson from Virgin Atlantic wanted to build an oil refinery exclusively for Jet fuel to supply the worlds airlines. He asked for financial assistance from many airlines in this venture. Some responses were it was not cost affective. Well do you think it might be cost affective now if his plans to build a refinery were successful? This might be just another example how unprepared we are in the fuel crisis that face us today. We do not plan ahead because we are in denial.

Dunno... Forming a purchasing cartel to try and take back some of the advantages the supplier cartel has makes more sense to me than investing in the supply chain does.

Plus, building one or two refineries won't fix the problem with distribution. Any cartel formed of the oneworld carriers is going to need fuel on all six continents.
