ASUNCION, Paraguay, Feb 9 (Reuters) - A judge in Paraguay ordered on Thursday a preventive embargo on $1.3 million worth of American Airlines (AMR.N: Quote, Profile, Research) assets, in a case brought against the company by former workers.

The asset freeze would be lifted if workers reached an out- of-court agreement with the company, he said.

Just an Update:

U.S.-based American Airlines (AMR.N: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Saturday it will try to reach an out-of-court agreement with seven former employees who have sued for non-wage benefits in Paraguay after the airline quit operating in the South American nation earlier this month.

A Paraguayan judge on Thursday ordered the preventive embargo of about $1.3 million worth of the company's assets to cover potential compensation to the workers.

"The employees have been presented a proposal to reach an accord. This is in the hands of the law. We will be present throughout the process and we hope that this can be resolved," said American Airlines spokesman Billy Sanez, adding that the ex-employees were seeking compensation for benefits such as free or discounted flights.

Sanez said the company plans to question the formula used to set the embargo, which the judge has said would be lifted if the parties reached a private accord.
