Piedmont denies 'deal' to uncover whistle-blowers
Union says airline offered pilots "free pass' on tests
by Tom Precious

ALBANY — Piedmont Airlines has offered its pilots a "free pass" on required, annual safety training that tests their flying skills in return for providing names of fellow pilots who anonymously raised concerns to The Buffalo News in January about an airline safety device, its pilot union has charged.

An executive at Piedmont, a wholly owned subsidiary of US Airways that flies into Buffalo and 54 other cities, approached "numerous" pilots offering a trade: turn in the names of the whistle-blowers in return for a pass on their Continuing Qualification training and a five-day break from flying duty, the union charges.

If nothing else, the article seems a very well written, by someone who actually knows a bit about the subject. How refreshing for a media story about aviation.

While shocked, I'm certainly not surprised that something along these lines would surface at US Airways. This type of rumor has existed since the BK days at "old US" and my guess would be this is a leftover part of the culture. US & HP near as I can tell did share one comman trait at the senior level and that is a contempt for employees, especially unionized ones.

Do I believe that the above happened? ABSOLUTELY!!!

That's the real problem. US Management has little if any Credibility with either its best customers or employees. A 3rd party reports something and no one even doubts the veracity of the story, they assume it to be true. That's what happens when employees and customers no longer trust you. They now work backwards from the assumption they are being screwed instead of the other way round.

How does the company allow a free pass on continuing education if it is mandated by the FAA, if for no other reason than I am sure it is in the appropriate (and government approved) policy manuals?

And of course, certain US Airways haters are in full force again. How about reserving judgement on the story til the truth actually comes out?? Could this be true? Possibly but none of us knows at this point.. Could this just be union propaganda? Possibly but none of us knows at this point. If it is true, then it of course is not good and should be appropriately dealt with. But if its not true, I say US Airways goes after this newspaper as well as the union!!

Precicely my point. NONE of us can verify the veracity of the story. Whether you resort to name calling or not in calling certain posters "US haters" it does happen to not be an uncommon reaction from those who have followed the actions of US Airways Management both Pre and Post Merger.

I assume Doug Parker to be customer unfriendly not because of any personal bias but because HE TOLD ME SO in his public comments. I didn't appear to me in a vison, he friggin' told me.

Same as Scot Kirby did during the Res Migration.

It's like Oprah (of all people) when she says, "When people show you who that are, BELIEVE THEM". Sadly that's all I'm doing, they said it, I believe and take them at their word. I don't ignore that fact that in word and in deed they are the most customer/employee UNFRIENDLY carrier in the USA and I've got nearly 5 years of last place standings in the DOT Consumer Complaints stats to back me up.

Do you?

[applause] best post of the day...maybe of the week

Piedmont is not US Airways, they have their own operating certificate and executives, the are owned by the same holding company. For once I cant agree with the Doug bashing on this one.

You do realize that this article is about PDT, not US Airways Right?? While PDT is a wholly-owned operator, they have their own Mgmt. etc.
As far as the "rumors" since the BK days, I have never heard anything of the sort. Seems you are a bit quick to jump to such a quick judgement of US Airways.

Yup they have their own management, with I believe a VP of Express that sits in Tempe. Those "CEO's" or actually the title is president, are very much lap dogs to their upper management out West. When the merger came about, they were all summoned by the mothership and told how they would run their respective ships. Yes they have their own management teams, but they are very much directed by those out west.

A couple of PDT pilots were heard today to say that the story is rather overblown, but there is some basis to it.

People that don't work for US Airways seem to know the most about it 🙄 No, best comment of the week. Quoting Oprah when bashing Doug. Hahaha what the heII?

Now there is a dandy question! What are they going to do? Falsify the paperwork? CQT is NOT optional. More than anything else, this makes me think there is a fair amount of bologna to this.

Driver B)

Well supposedly, from another board, it was one of the head guys or check airman in the training department that is accused of this. How hard would it be to give a pass on a CQT??? Uhmmmm...show up and you pass no matter, not that hard to do I would imagine...
