United flight diverts after captain and flight attendant argue
By Kieran Daly

United Airlines is conducting an internal investigation after one of its captains diverted a flight to deplane a senior flight attendant who he argued with.

Flight 842 from Sao Paulo, Brazil to Chicago O'Hare diverted to Miami early in the morning of 14 July midway through the scheduled 6hr 45min non-stop flight.

A source familiar with the incident says the captain ordered the purser of the Boeing 767 to leave the aircraft because he was "not respecting his authority".

Story

Purser probably did something outrageous like ask the Captain to wait 10 minutes for his meal so that they could complete the F/C service. Instead of diverting the Captain should have just ordered an exit opened and shoved the Purser out. That'll teach 'em.

On airliners.net, someone gave an insider's account of what happened. If his story is true, you are amazingly close. Chapeau!

GRU-ORD was only scheduled for 6:45 flight time?

That's a heck of an unusual tailwind!

🙄 🙄 I cant WAIT to hear the details. Couldnt find it on airliners.net, but i'll keep looking.
I so it happen once in London, just before pushback the Cpt- we will call him Cpt Narcissist, decided that the purser was not obedient enough and he had security take her bags off and she was physically remove her from the flight. We ( the f/as ) and the flight deck crew were stunned to see this actually happen. He got in MAJOR trouble for it... be interesting to see what happens in this case.

He demmanded that the Gen Decs be brought up to the cockpit immediately in the middle of the FC meal svc.She slipped it through the cockpit door, and when he came out for his potty break, he screamed at her. He declared an emergecny landing in MIA and had her removed.

In my short career, I have had a captain tell me that my primary responsibility was to see to the needs of the cockpit. My response was, "Really? According to my manual and my training, my primary responsibility is safety in general, and specifically on this flight to take care of the 16 Executive Platinum and Platinum customers in F/C (LAX-DFW flight)."

I told him that if he could show me differently in writing that would suit me just fine. I pointed out that I had offered to serve him dinner before or after my F/C meal service--his choice. But, I could not stop in the middle of a deluxe meal service (back in the day of salads served and picked up before the entree served and made to order sundaes for dessert) to serve the cockpit.

Fortunately, he decided not to pursue his power trip; so, no harm, no foul.

Every airline has a few sky Gods like that. They are disliked by everyone, even their co-pilots. We had a guy with a huge no fly list of FO's and showed what a nut he was on a flight to LHR. On the out bound over not getting the crew customs form the moment he asked for it, he went in to a swearing hissy fit. On the out bound he asked the Chief pilot in ORD to have the 1 and 8 removed, he said No. He asked the MIA Chief pilot to remove them, he said No. So he told LHR OPS he was not leaving until they were off. He delayed the MIA flight and then a ORD flight so they could switch crew members. He had a reputation of these antics and went against two chief pilots but worse of all against Debbie Carvata. He ended up with a career decision day.

I recall one time I had to go down to see why flight wasn't boarding. Went onboard to see and captain said he needed a few minutes. So I waited on the jetbridge. He then put the f/a through a test of the different signals he used and wanted to be sure they all knew them. I won't forget the f/as faces as they "passed" his tests.....

He screamed at her and then he declared an emergency? Is this true?

About twenty years ago I worked a flt to LIS-BCN, and on the ground in Lisbon we got a bomb threat. William Randoph Hearst and his wife and a couple of other celebs were in F/C. We deplaned all of the passengers and Captain Ego ordered the FSM (flight service manager/purser) to have the crew go through the cabin and look in the overhead bins and under all of the seat cushions and she refused his orders. He then sat in FC and ate the left over food while the security team searched the aircraft.
When we touched down at JFK the entire crew was met by security and a team of supervisors. We then found out that the capt. had charged the entire crew with insubordination and neglect. We were all questioned for hours and removed from our schedules pending further investigation. I think it took about two weeks and we never heard anything else of it.
I wonder if the UA capt. had short mans syndrome like our captain did.

Well, I had read elsewhere that this was his first trip back after a prolonged medical leave. Assuming the truth of all of this his next flights, if any, will be in Cessna's.

so glad i'm not there anymore...i got out while the gettin was good and have never looked back...except for the occasional online gossip...

sounds like the airline has sunk to impossible lows...the taylor guitar, this thread's subject...i'll be surprised if they survive at all for the long term...

i've been gone for 2 years...i pay to fly now...never use my passes...don't wanna go near that outfit...sorry for all my friends that're still there and have to put up with the constant demoralization of this company
