In the "you can't make this up" department, several blue state Senate candidates and Planned Parenthood are opposed to a GOP initiative to make some forms of birth control pills available over the counter without a prescription.

This would essentially eliminate almost all barriers to women being able to access BCP's. That includes the uninsured, teenagers who don't want to have to tell their parents that they're sexually active, and others who might want to be discrete about taking ownership of their contraception decisions.

For Planned Parenthood or anyone in Congress to be opposed to removing barriers really makes me wonder how much of their false "war on women" agenda was about unfettered access to birth control, and how much of it was really just about control in general.

Ironically, placing condoms and BCP's on the same playing field as far as access would actually constitute equal protection...

"Equal Protection".........an Intended Pun I assume Eric ?

I do find this to be an interesting post/topic nonetheless though.

"Planned Parenthood responded that it "supports any effort" to make it easier for women to buy birth control, including making some methods available over the counter. But the group said that the policy will do nothing to help women afford contraception, and that most Republicans are still opposed to the provision of the Affordable Care Act that requires most employers to cover birth control in their health care plans."

And you manage to do it anyway.  Did the idea of going to the PP web site to find an explanation seem like such a stretch?

If it's available without a prescription, the prices fall precipitously.

My son used to take Claritin, and it ran upward of $1 per pill when it was prescription-only. Ten years ago, the patent expired, and it became available over the counter.

Now, it's $5 for a 100 pill bottle of the generic.

The most common BCP's run about $4/month just about everywhere else in the world. It's the liability for pharmacists and other overhead driven by insurance companies which drive up the cost for a consumer.

Oh Shiit.
Under The above scenario, WTF will the cost be over the counter(when that day comes)....for VIAGARA !

Medicare/Medicaid dropped coverage of ED drugs (as did most health plans) in 2008 or 2009, so the drug companies have a very rare opportunity to continue to give customers the shaft, and those opportunities are harder and harder to come by.

Planned Parenthood now airing ads claiming that cheap access to birth control is bad.

Follow the money, folks. PP stands to see a reduction in abortions if there's easier access to BCP's. Of course they'd be opposed to it.

It's bad for bosses to be interfering in a woman's health care decisions, but why exactly is it good to keep the insurance companies in the middle?
