Spot on. Parker knows if he doesn't get DL, he will be left without a partner. If DL merges with NW it will lift the restrictions of the poison pill for CO. UA would most likely merge with CO and AA would remain independent as their current route structure is strong enough to remain that way.
...actually, AA might like merging with US at that point. Beef up their East & West coast presence. I would say that Delta is US's #1 option, but they have others. Maybe they could combine with a couple small guys as well (AS, YX)...they have options. Parker is by no means deperate. Desperate would be to have waited until other deals came out and then pick what's left...this was preemptive...that's balls!
