The Port of Seattle has spent thousands of dollars on causes it shouldn't have supported and kept records so poorly that employee theft at the airport might have gone undetected, according to a scathing audit.
The port could not "demonstrate the appropriateness of certain expenditures, made inappropriate expenditures and paid vendors in advance of receiving services" totaling $504,258 in 2004, according to State Auditor Brian Sonntag in the annual report, released last month.
Among the questionable items, the port:
# Couldn't provide receipts for $95,050 in credit card charges, even as two employees who made personal purchases on that account were being investigated by port police.
# Lost $300,000 when it paid to sponsor the canceled Pacific Rim Sports Summit without a contract or guarantee of a refund.
