Positive article!

It's always nice to see good articles about "US". I'm glad CLT news is fair to US Airways unlike PIT media. Here's the complete story. Thanks for posting that! :)

4:25 pm | US Airways -- suddenly a success story

US Airways, struggling for survival a year ago, is now looking like a Wall Street darling.

It's a big turnaround for the Arizona-based airline, which has its biggest hub in Charlotte. As it continues merging its labor force and operations with America West Airlines, analysts are heaping praise and its stock is surging -- despite high fuel costs.

The recent praise:

• Last week, Prudential analyst Bob McAdoo wrote in a report that he's "pleasantly surprised" that there have been no big problems integrating the carriers and said big purchases of stock by board members and officers adds "a degree of confidence in our positive outlook for US Airways."

• Two weeks ago, J.P. Morgan Securities analyst Jamie Baker wrote that US Airways is poised to post big revenue gains as other carriers reduce flights. He called the stock "the cheapest (airline) name we follow, bar none, and obviously our favorite."

• Last month, Fitch Ratings upgraded US Airways' debt to a "positive" from a "negative" outlook, citing the revenue gains and impressive cash reserve.

Buoyed by analysts' comments, US Airways' stock surged last week to its highest mark since the September merger. It closed Friday at $43.26 -- more than double its opening price seven months ago.

In a recent employee newsletter, US Airways CEO Doug Parker said the operation is running "very, very well." He said bankruptcy filings by Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines and the collapse of Independence Air helped remove competition -- allowing US Airways to raise fares.

A little over a year ago, US Airways was the one under bankruptcy protection, cutting costs where it could in a fight to stay alive.

Other airlines, too, have said they're taking in more money because of the cutbacks in the industry. American Airlines said first-quarter revenue rose nearly 13 percent over the same period in 2005, and Continental Airlines said its revenue surged 18 percent.

US Airways has said it expects to make a profit in 2005, excluding merger costs. It releases its first-quarter financial results May 9, and its annual meeting will be at the Charlotte Convention Center on May 17.
