The only thing we know is we received our "founding member" welcome kits and continue business as usual. We are having to set up our passwords and activating our email accounts, but nothing much beyond that at my station.

Great, but what about all of us who are trying to support our families and in this economy, REAS is the only place we found hiring? Are we to simply be flacked off like a scab and discarded?

Spoken like a true union cool-aid drinker. Are you going to personally make sure I get a job with mainline if your wish were to come true? Or am I just supposed to go back on unemployment and flounder in debt?

If you can guarentee me a job with mainline...PM me. I'm interested. I could use the raise and full time work. But in the meantime, I work for what I do. It beats unemployment and being a drain on society. At least I have a reason to get up in the mornings now. Sorry if my apparent grotesque existance in your perceived exclusive domain is so offensive to you. But my family has a right to food and shelter, too.

I think that I made my last post a bit too personal. Things in the nation employment wise are very different in my town than in other parts of the US. We have been shielded by the down turn. I take the subject of RHS very personal do to the constant threat they have posed to mainline workers. I would tell you to post for my job, as I have 4 days of work left with the airlines but without a union contract to back you up, you may be right back with RHS by next year. Sorry for making it too personal and being insensitive to your personal problems.

No, those decisions were made independent and far away from me. I was only hired during the late summer of 2009. What damage was done to your union was done long before I filled out a job application.

But, in all fairness...why is Delta looking to lower costs? I live in a union dominated state...unions never pay their way and always do nothing but drive up the costs of doing business that the rest of society have to cover or businesses fail.

Do I agree with paying a CEO $25,000,000 and unlimited benefits and then looking at the guy on the factory floor and telling him that he has no need to come in on Monday because the company can no longer afford to keep you? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

But do unions place excessive demands for wages and benefits that have to be paid for by the customers of the business while they themselves are trying to make ends meet? YES!

There has to be a happy medium between the two. I work for the government part time as well, in public safety. I see exactly how these government unions keep the taxpayers held hostage with their salary and benefit demands and get rediculous benefits that no private sector company could ever conceivably provide while trying to make a profit. All the while, those who are earning from minimum wage to less then union wages have to foot these bills and still try to keep a roof over the heads of their families, food in their bellies, clothes on their back, etc.

Like I say, there has to be a happy medium.

Would I like to make more, especially in light of what is expected of me? Sure. But compare what I do for the company and what it costs with that of the tradtional job descriptions in the business and the compensations/expectations of the legacies unions...is it any wonder why REAS is being phased in? And that isn't my fault. That damage was done long before I ever showed up.

I understand where you are coming from, but we live in an economy now where unions are going to be going by the wayside because they are just too expense to keep up. Its sad to say, but we are no longer a world powerhouse...we are a service based society now, not a manufacturing one. Unions worked when we were a manufacturing economy, but as a service economy...it just doesn't work. That's why waitresses aren't paid $20 per hour. Nor hotel clerks, maids, retails store employees, etc.

Would I love to be making ten bucks an hour (or more) then I am for what I do...ABSOLUTELY! But in this economic climate, that isn't going to happen any time soon. People are looking for the cheapest air fare for their travel...many times even well below that of a taxi fare from one side of town to another in a major city. That's unreasonable, but let's face up to the fact that it is a reality.

As revenue changes, costs must change. Or you go bankrupt and then everyone looses but the "corporation."

Corporate greed, well, that's a totally different situation. But even with that being an issue, its undeniable that the world has changed.

I'll quit my job and just go and get on welfare just so you union boys can continue to live on excessive wages in comparison to the rest of the working world and when all of us are out of jobs because no one can afford to buy products and services...who will you point your finger at then?

Do you know why we have cars that cost absurd prices? Unions.

If you don't like me working for a living at the ONLY job I have been able to find in this disaster area of union worship Michigan...get me hired where you are so I can earn your wages and be your equal.

Organized labor loves to blame management for all the worlds evils. Yet, those of us who do not work in union controlled shops can see that unions are just as responsbile for the economic ills we now find ourselves in.

I've worked in public safety for over 20 years. I cannot count the number of times I've had to stand by for HOURS waiting for 4 different crews from the utility company so I could open the road to traffic. One crew was the "assessment crew." The next group of guys would be the "tree cutting crew" but don't expect them to remove the tree, they just cut it up. Then I'd have to wait for the tree removal crew to show up to remove the tree from the road because they are union workers and not allowed to remove the wood they just cut up. After having about 12 guys on scene over the last several hours, I'd finally get a lineman crew that would remove the line from the road and put it back up on the poll. Only then could I open the road for the public.

Give me a break. Why not have an assessing guy, a tree cutter, a tree remover and a lineman all in the same truck. One truck arrives on scene, problem solved in 20 minutes. But that is not how unions work. And because you are dealing with a potential live wire, you don't dare touch it yourself.

So Kev...since I'm the source of all your troubles, please...get me that precious union job next to you so I can put food on the table. In the meantime, I'll make due with what I have. Strange concept, but my family needs food and housing, too. Unless you have room at your house for some freeloaders. If that's the case, PM me with your address, we'll be there by the weekend. Because, apparently, I have not right to put food on my table since I don't have a union job that has union wages that I'm using to pay for it.

Seems that I should just be a drain on society and be a lazy welfare receiptient since I can't line up the coveted union job somewhere in this disaster area of a state. Do you think I like working for less then half of what I used to? Hardly, but I don't see anyone putting cash and blank checks in my mailbox or under my door to help me pay my bills...so I do what I have to.

Enough with the histrionics already. I stand by what I said. We all make choices in life.

Job market in MI blows? Great, move somewhere where there are opportunities. Can't/won't move? That's okay too, just don't use it as a rationalization for what you're doing, and the role it's playing in accelerating the race to the bottom.

By the way, not sure where in MI you are, but if you're in either FNT or GRR you SHOULD be mainline right now. We all received from former SVP Crystal Knotek saying that NW M/L would be taking over DCI work in both. That letter went out last October. More recently, it was reiterated on DLNet. We're still waiting...

Like I said...if you can get me on mainline, let me know. As it stands right now, I have two choices, work for REAS or have no income. Like it or not, that's reality.

If the plan is for my station to be a mainline station, I have no issue with that. I'll take the raise and step up from where I am. But as it stands right now, its REAS and I have a job. That's something that can't be said by a lot of people in Michigan.

I would love to move, but I take care of my parents and they are not in a position to bail to someplace better. Not with housing prices being 40 cents on the dollar, foreclosure houses all around driving down the value even more and having a reverse mortgage that has to be paid before they can get out of that old house. So until they are, I cannot go because my obligation is to them.

Trust me, mainline would certainly make paying the bills easier, but I don't see any job postings for mainline in my area. Heck, anywhere for that matter.
