Search resumes for 1950 sunken plane

May. 25, 2006 at 11:28AM

A search has resumed in Lake Michigan for a near-forgotten Northwest Airlines DC-4 that crashed in a storm 56 years ago and took 58 lives.
Underwater archeologists and amateur historians have embarked on a mission to find the wreckage of Flight 2501 in 200 feet of water about 18 miles northwest of Benton Harbor, The Chicago Tribune reported.
On June 23, 1950, 55 passengers and a crew of three took off from New York's LaGuardia Airport bound for Seattle but encountered stormy weather over the lake and crashed.
Body parts, a fuel tank float, blankets, shredded arm rests and small wooden pieces from the 93-foot-long plane were about all that was recovered from Lake Michigan beaches for several days.
The aircraft had no data or voice recorders and an investigation concluded the plane either broke up or the crew lost control in turbulence.
Searchers this week finished scanning the lakebed with high-tech equipment, and divers hope to return to specific sites on Saturday, the newspaper said.
The search is being financed by Clive Cussler, author of underwater adventure fiction that has sold more than 100 million copies.

All but forgotten? How about forgotten? By NWA anyway. During our New Hire Orientation we received a little history lesson about NWA. They specifically said that NWA has had only one crash with fatalities in its history and that was a DC-9 here at DTW due to pilot error, No flaps at take-off. One child survived the crash. They never mentioned this one in their NWA history lesson.

DC9-80?

Amazing you dont even know fleet types, the MD-80 is actually a DC9-80 series.

Originally, then somewhere down the line someone decided it needed to depart from the -9 line in the early stages of production. You are right though, all the MD-80 is is an overgrown -9.

The Mcdonnell folks decided that after the purchase of Douglas, hence the MD moniker.

Heard a similar but different version of it from someone who was there. 🙁

Oh PTO, don't try to pick yourself up from that one.

There was another crash besides this one... they probably told you (if you were listening) that this was the most recent accident. Where do you think the Red tail comes from? (you know like the scab's a$$ as mentioned earlier-RED)

Yes there was another,I think it was a Military Charter that disappeared in a ice and snowbound region, can't remember exactly where. They either had hell or never did find the aircraft so they painted all their tails red so the aircraft could easily be spotted in the event of another crash. There are the basics, do you care to clean it up?

PTO, I think Jenny was referring to the accident that occurred in the 1990s at DTW where a DC-9 and a 727, which was taking off collided on the runway as the DC-9 was taxing across the active. None on the 727 was hurt but I think a few were hurt or killed on the DC-9. May be someone can provide a link to that.

I am not sure but I will try to find out when I get home tonight from work. I just thought I'd point out a more recent one for PTO cause I remember seeing that collision on tv when I got home from school
