UA usually runs well above average in cancellation both for mainline and its regional carriers.
As the summer begins and the regional carriers' ability to staff their flights has the potential to wear thin, this link will be worth watching.
UA has more regional flying as part of its domestic system than any other US airline.
Reliable service is the first and foremost thing any passenger pays for. The best service on a delayed airline means nothing. Above average operational performance coupled with at least average reliability will always win over a carrier that a customer cannot trust.
Throw in service issues including the IFE issue noted by E and labor issues and it isn't hard for premium customers to decide that it is worth taking a hiatus even from their preferred airline for a while.
Money lost today can easily tilt the long-term balance of power in the industry.
