SFO incident

It looks like quite a few US departures have been cancelled; I assume many inbound diversions.

Looks like tonight's redyeyes to the East are still on.

------------------------------------------------------------

Of course, there was a big impact on SFO and the travel plans of many people were disrupted. Sadly, some took to complaining on social media, including a pathetic woman who tweeted "Thanks a lot Korean Air (sic) for crashing an airplane and getting me stuck in SF!" Someone else complained to a reporter about a cancelled Southwest flight and bemoaned having to take BART over to OAK to catch a flight.
Very sad how some people are so self centered.

Sad news for sure.

I noticed US canceled 3 flights from PHL and 3 from CLT. Why couldn't they operate into San Jose/Oakland. Also 659 was over Nevada an went down to PHX. A lot easier to get the passengers to SFO from 12/30 miles away. San Jose is easy to commute to SFO as well as OAK. Don't make sense in the diversions and cancellations when there were alternates available. Especially on how load factors are.

there were reports that SJC had run out of gates and planes were stopped on the taxiways waiting to unload. SJC and OAK simply can't handle the overflow from SFO - and every other airline probably would have preferred to divert to the Bay Area as well. Several int'l flights diverted to OAK or SJC - supposedly LH's 380 went to OAK. A number of others went to SEA and some to LAX.

Also remember it's a Saturday night schedule and the staffing on the ground in SJC and OAK would have to be taken into consideration. It wouldn't make sense to land 3 or 4 planes into one of these cities with no staff to handle them, unless it were a last minute diversion. One CLT-SFO flight diverted into SMF. They had originally cancelled the 8pm from CLT and PHX to SFO, but reinstated them when the airport was reopened. I think it was about 4 flights they canx (not including the diversions that were already enroute at the time).

Indeed it did. Spent some time there before going to SFO after a Bay Area tour:

Cathay and KLM 744s went to OAK as well.

SK diverted to SMF, along with SQ and AC.

In a news conference, an SFO spokesperson noted that Star Alliance carriers at SFO were providing assistance to Asiana. Probably mostly by UA, given the size of its operation there.

Capacity, logistics and a bunch of other factors.
Given the situation, IMHO it was handled very well.
SFO will be hampered for at least another few days or weeks as 28L and 28R will be closed for investigation (not to mention debris).
Time for patience, PAX included.

Two flights today operated into OAK instead of SFO. They also operated extra sections (continuations of these diverted flights) to PHX. Both were already booked full from OAK. I would expect this to continue if the ATC delays continue into SFO and the staffing in OAK permits it. Smart move instead of a straight out cancellation now that they have some time to preplan.

28 Right/10 Left reopened this afternoon, so SFO should be almost back to normal in time for Monday morning.

It would appear that 28R would be closed because of the debris and investigation of 28L for awhile.
Don't know how 28R could be open unless AC taxi 28R to the end and do a 360 degree turn. It will be interesting see how they manage this.
JMHO,

Of course 28R could be used for landing only.
