Remember after the X-mas 04 bag meltdown, when US flew bags from PHL to CLt for sortation and shipment. In the wake of the LHR T-5 fiasco, BA is sending bags Milan for sortation; they are also shipping bags via FedEx.

Why is it that fancy new terminals seem to always, always, have bag sorting problems?

Maybe BAA should have listened to the Monty Python song "I'm so Worried":

Mods: Feel free to move this to the Water Cooler page. I posted it here because of the similarity to US's shipping bags elsewhere for sortation.

China opened a new terminal in PEK and there was no mention of problems. Of course if there were problems we would never hear about them (Tibet?) anyway, I would imagine the people who were in charge there would be under ALOT more pressure to have things open without a hitch.

Also consider the terminal in PEK was built in somewhere on the order of 4 or 5 years. How many years was T5 being built?

When the Chinese government decided to build it, the bulldozers could theoretically be out there the next day. No input from local residents, businesses or environmental concerns need to be addressed.

Contrast that with LHR T5, which was conceived in the early 90's. Ground broke about 10 years later.

The completely new DEN airport opened in 1994 (after numerous delays) with baggage system problems

PITs new midfield terminal (essentially a whole new airport) opened in 1992 with few. I remember comments in the press about how people's bags were on the conveyers before they got there (partially due to the long walk/train ride from airside to landside)

(bumpity for the foreign thread, ANY foreign thread..)

Baggage conveyors can be fixed. This issue will soon fade. Willie Walsh is THE MAN! He should be running UA and then we'd really have a game on!

Hey, they only only a new major airport once ever decade so the bag people need the work.

Although I am curious why BA chose to ship the bags to a foreign destination for sorting. Imagine that happening here? Maybe the Alitalians need the work.

What is a 'maltdown'?
I drink a single malt but never heard of a 'MaltDown'...😛
