Southwest Phl-florida $49

Try and buy one of those fares. It's next to impossible. There are very FEW of these seats.

You should edit your post to say few of those seats left. Most of the flights are getting to capacity.

Generally. that's true. However, they more than make up for it in their walk-up fares which, in contrast to what US charges, are quite reasonable and completely refundable. I believe that on some routes, WN actually averages more per seat mile in revenue than its competitors. From here (CMH) , I can do a last-minute same-day round trip to Chicago or DC for a fraction of the US fare.

US has restructured their fares for those markets being flown by WN. They have already matched the fares and pretty much the fare rules.

I don't care what carrier it is, or how low their costs are...you can't make a cent with those fares. There must be less than 10 seats per flight offered at that fare.

I've paid more than LUV's max of $600 RT to go PHL-PVD in the past.

It's the walk up fare differential that's important, not the dirt cheap excursion fares.

It comes down to 2 things:

1) the perishibility of the product - a seat unsold today can't be put on the shelf to be used on an overbooked flight later on.

2) yield management - even WN, depending on time of year, holidays, etc, has 20% - 35% of their seats empty on average. Better to sell at below cost than at get no revenue from a seat that would otherwise be empty.

Many times that would be the case, but not here. I made several attempts and was able to find availability in most instances if I was flexible within one day. The interesting thing was that I could find Fri to Sun flights in the lowest fare levels. Not just the Tue/Wed/Sat sales anymore!

It looks to me as if there is MORE availability than usual. Generally, though (and this goes for the US "match") the matching carriers tend to offer little or no capacity even though they publish the fare. WN, focusing more on PR, knows that you cannot sell the flights out at these fares, but to be believable, you must let the public see that you are attempting to offer some seats.

Very nice. Now how about restructuring the fares in ALL os US's markets? It's fine and dandy that we will charge $69 or whatever walkup fare on PHL PVD, but guess what happens when you try to go PHL to say, BDL???? You get ROBBED! I just checked on the website, and the walkup fare is $432.11. WHY? What is the customer paying for with that fare? One more reason why either things must change, or the place gets shut down.

P.S. DellDude - Don't give me that "Wahh, I am going to subsidize the passengers cheap fares" junk. If we had more intelligent people in management, if we had more robust workers, if we had workers understanding that you cannot compete with anyone when you are earning $20/hr for a job that your competitor is doing for $12/hr.......well, hopefully you get the idea. You know how it says on your paycheck "Brought to you by the customers who make USAirways their airline of choice"? They are no longer choosing you, and they are not going to bring it to you anymore. You either work for their dollars, or lose the game.

I just got off swa.com and was able to find availability on PHL - PVD - PHL for $ 79 round trip. Seats are available on that route as of now.
