Southwest Airlines made its mark with no-frills service and JetBlue Airways ascended by offering such perks as live in-flight television.

But Spirit Airlines hopes that business-class seating and an extensive schedule to Latin America and the Caribbean will help it overtake those airlines, the dominant low-cost carriers.

Despite losing millions of dollars last year and facing discontent among pilots and flight-attendants unions over staffing levels, Spirit is expanding rapidly in the cutthroat business of low-cost air travel. Analysts said that Spirit is on the right path for success in an industry that has seen many casualties.

"Spirit seems like the type of airline that can grow as fast as they can get equipment. I think this airline is very well positioned," said Terry Trippler, an analyst who runs the travel Web site cheapseats.com.
