Stop Oil Speculation Now: Urge Your Senators to Finish the Job
Sept. 25, 2008

Our campaign to get comprehensive reform to our nation’s energy policy is making progress. Since the Stop Oil Speculation Now campaign began about two months ago, more than 2 million messages from airline employees and concerned citizens around the nation have encouraged Members of Congress to act.

The House of Representatives passed two bills – one to limit excessive speculation and another to increase domestic production. Now, our focus turns to the Senate to pass similar legislation so that it can be signed into law.

“It was the threat of real legislation in mid-July that brought prices lower, but without Senate action prices could easily rebound,â€￾ Air Transport Association President and CEO Jim May said. “A bipartisan, comprehensive energy policy that combines stronger Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) oversight over the energy markets with strong requirements to increase domestic supplies, expand efforts to develop alternative energy sources and increase conservation is the only way to ensure oil and fuel prices won’t return to record-high levels.â€￾

The need for immediate action in the Senate is critical. Oil prices have done an abrupt about-face from their recent decline and have begun to surge again. On Sept. 22, crude futures spiked as high as $130 per barrel before closing $16.37 higher at $120.92 per barrel – the largest one-day price gain in New York Mercantile Exchange history.

US Airways appreciates the many employees who have contacted Congress in our previous grassroots efforts on this matter. It is essential that we continue to press the issue with our elected representatives. We ask you once again to please take a few moments to urge your Senators to take action before Congress adjourns for the upcoming elections. You can send emails to your Senators from the US Airways grassroots Web site at

Thank you in advance for your support. Together we can make a difference.
