The Memorial Day double standard

Memorial Day, holiday in the United States observed in late May. Previously designated Decoration Day, it was inaugurated in 1868 by Gen. John A. Logan for the purpose of decorating the graves of Civil War veterans and has since become a day on which all war dead are commemorated.


The TWU eliminated the observance of Memorial Day from the Mechanic and Related Labor Agreement.

But, the TWU brags about fighting for the issue in other venues.

What we did have were more holidays, more vaction and more money. You condone every concession by your beloved TWU. The socialist actions of this organization to keep as many employeed whether they are needed for the operation or not is the cause for these concessions. The point is that the TWU in other industries appear to fight for their negotiated benefits, where as the TWU in the airline industry does the opposite. The question still stands, Why the Double Standard?

Compelling and Imperative issue is MEMORIAL DAY, not the snow day.

No wonder you cannot and will not defend the profession, you are likely confused about what this means as well as most other issues that require thinking for yourself. Why don't you attend church instead of the next union meeting and pray for some wisdom?

Local 562 Update 6-8-03
[SIZE= 10pt] This week I will be attending the presidents council in DFW. Just to let you know that at the last M&R negotiations meeting in may, Tulsa President Randy MacDonald introduced as an item swap that midnight retention pay (.50 an hour) be given up for concession in return for more holidays. I asked Randy how much of his base works midnight''s he said he did not know. I told him 4% of his base works midnights (voluntarily I might add) and the majority work [/SIZE][SIZE= 10pt]midnights[/SIZE][SIZE= 10pt] in the line. I informed the committee that this was improper as [/SIZE][SIZE= 10pt]Tulsa[/SIZE][SIZE= 10pt] is mostly unaffected by Randy''s'' motion. Lets look at what this will provide: .50 cents an hour x 40 hours per week x 52 weeks=1040.00 dollars.
3 holidays: 4 hours x 30.20= 120.80 x 3 hoilidays= 362.40

The line who give up midnight retention will lose 677.60 dollars and Tulsa members will gain the holiday pay.
It is improper and does not provide the balance of equities for a President of Tulsa to request a concession that does not affect his base and his base will gain the most. The motion can only be brought forward by the presidents who are the most effected. I can assure all of you that there is no Title 1 President in the line who will ever discuss the MRT as a concession. The only way for the MRT to be removed is by people who are not affected. The TWU International in the right frame of fairness should not allow MRT to be proposed unless by the members most affected. I will keep you informed on this volatile situation!
