PITTSBURGH (AP) - Sports in America start with the national anthem. The Dolphins- Steelers game was an exception.
Rushing to begin the nationally televised matchup following a 25- minute weather delay, the NFL chose to skip the anthem Monday night before Miami played Pittsburgh. The game started without any of the traditional pregame ceremonies, except the coin toss, and neither team was introduced on the public address system.

According to the Steelers, the NFL wanted the game to begin as soon as possible following the delay. Several more minutes would have been needed to set up a microphone and sound equipment at midfield, where the anthem is traditionally performed at Steelers games.

There was no apparent fan reaction to the omission, which occurred as many fans were scrambling to get back to their seats for the kickoff. The fans were ordered to leave the lower seating bowl at Heinz Field when lightning and a heavy rain resulted in both teams being waved off the field during pregame warmups.

The teams warmed up for an additional nine minutes before the game began at 8:55 p.m. EST. Pittsburgh won 3-0 on Jeff Reed's 24-yard field goal with 17 seconds remaining.

National anthems are rarely televised during NFL games, with the Super Bowl being an exception, so there was no indication if any veterans groups were unhappy with the omission.

Probably. This story is just waiting to get blown completely out of proportion by loony right-wingers alongside accusations of a secular-humanistic cultural battle on all that is good, decent and holy.

Nah. It is OK to skip it altogether, as long as you place your hand over your heart when it plays the next time.

Perhaps this is your favorite rendition!

This one does the trick:

The world is facing real problems and people are worried about a anthem at a game? This a joke right?

The anthem pulls us together as Americans.

I remember watching a hockey game that took place in Canada and heard the crowd sing Our Anthem as good, maybe better, than some Baseball games I have been to.

It's the common things that make this country great. Forget them, and you might as well live in France.

Below is the Art Rooney's Apology.

"Our guys were going to send the singer out to sing immediately after they were sending the teams back on (the field)," Rooney said of Monday's game. "I said, 'Well, wait, because there's nobody in the stands. There's no sense in singing it when everybody's standing in the concourse.' So they waited, and the league and the network said, 'Well, now we don't have a window.'"

A Veterans of Foreign Wars spokesman said that despite the rainy conditions at Pittsburgh's Heinz Field, the anthem should have taken place.

"They should have still sung the national anthem because that's what we do in America, regardless of network air time," spokesman Joe Davis told the newspaper. "I'm sure a lesson has been learned and it won't happen again, and that's the most we can ever ask."

I guess I just don't get it. Anthems, symbols and the like seem quite silly to me. I am more concerned about what they represent. That is what motivates me.

The pledge says "freedom and justice for all". Until that phrase actually means something in this nation I will not say the pledge.

The US is more than a flag. Th flag is a form of ID for this county just like a drovers license or a name. The principles that this nation should stand for are what is important. The anthem and all that go with it seem quite similar to the little yellow ribbons on cars. They make people feel good but do not do a damn thing to make the world a better place.

The fact that the article is even news worth is a sad reflection.

Mean while in Virgina ....

RICHMOND, Nov. 28 -- The loyalty pledge to the Republican Party that Virginia voters will be required to sign if they vote in the state's GOP presidential primary on Feb. 12 is another attempt by the party to police the open primary system.

On Feb. 12, a GOP primary voter will have to sign a piece of paper that says, "I, the undersigned, pledge that I intend to support the nominee of the Republican Party for President."

Loyalty Oath

This is what is important and news worthy. This country has it's priorities screwed up.
