SOUTHWEST PHILADELPHIA - July 11, 2006 - Officials quickly moved a jetliner to a remote section of Philadelphia International airport after receiving a bomb threat about the outgoing plane.

The call came in at about 9:15 a.m. from a courtesy phone at the airport according to airport officials. They say it was about departing U.S. Airways flight 1018 which was bound for St. Thomas. The plane was set to depart at 9:55, but passengers had not yet boarded.
The plane was taken to a remote section of the airport and searched by the Philadelphia Police Bomb Squad. No explosives were found aboard the jet. No other flights at the airport were affected.

Offiicals gave the all-clear and the flight is now running about 2 hours behind schedule to re-accommodate the 84 passengers who were booked for the flight, according to officials with U.S. Airways.

A Pax called in the threat from the white courtesy phone by the gate because his family had missed their connection to the flight.
The airport security cameras got him on tape and he was arrested.

So now the family likely still missed the flight and he will be charged with a felony. Not a good day for that family.

and all the pax too

I agree with the sentiment, but it is not practical for the passengers to make claims against him with one possible exception. If the passengers were to somehow have a quantifiable claim they could at least present it to the prosecutor in the jurisdiction it occurred and perhaps he/she could make it part of whatever plea bargain or sentence is made in the case.

The airline has a much easier time of it. They have absolutely quantifiable claims for the loss of income and added expenses incurred from the flight departing when it was factually going to depart. Such expenses include:

1. The addditional paid to the flight crew for the extension of their duty day and for any replacement crew members who may have been needed to work because of the incident;
2. The cost of any compensation to any passengers who missed connections from the departing flight;
3. The cost of compensation, including rebooking charges on other airlines, to passengers who were to be accomodated on that aircraft on future flights that day and needed to be otherwise accomodated because of the actions of the defendant and the repercussions of those actions; and,
4. Any additional costs incurred by by the airline that are attributable to the incident.

Well, hopefully he won't have free access to a phone for awhile.

He’ll have access, but definitely not free.

Heavily armored and expensive to make calls from. Actually, quite a nice little profit center for the facility that will be hosting his stay.

This reminds me of the time when some guy took his family on a trip across America in a station wagon and he took a security guard hostage. It was at Wallyworld, IIRC. He also dropped a dead relative off at a house in Arizona and dragged a dog behind his car. There are some sickos out there.
