The UAE air traffic recorded a 10.31 per cent jump last year, reaching 390,993 flights, well above the previous year's 354,426, according to the latest government statistics.

This translates into a whopping daily average of 1,071 flights per day. The UAE also issued six new operating licences last year, bringing the number of airline operators to 31 and aviation operators to 27, said a report in the Gulf News.

Last year 34 new aircraft were registered, taking the number to 260, according to the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). Three more companies specialised in aircraft spare parts were licensed, bringing the number to 20 while 19 more companies were licensed for maintenance of aircraft.

"The UAE has become the region's aviation hub in which our national carriers are playing a significant part," Sultan Saeed Al Mansouri, the UAE's Minister of Communications, told the media recently.
