UAL replaces quarterly performance bonus with lottery

I can't fathom what benefit the company management thought this idea would have. This sort of thing usually ends up with the lottery winner being one of those employees who shows up to work every day (thus becoming eligible for the lottery) and then spends the day putting forth the absolute minimum of effort required. We've all worked next to that person on more than one occasion.

This made PlaneBusiness last week. Apparently Kirby told an audience of 2000 managers that he screwed up. Don't see a total lack of spin like that too often.

Jim, UA has done a perfect attendance lottery dating back to the Bethune days at CO. They'd draw one name per workgroup for a Ford Explorer. A few years back (possibly right after Smisek was fired?) that turned into $1,000 cash awards for 700+ people twice a year.
