NEW YORK, Jun 06, 2005 (AP Online via COMTEX) -- United Airlines, the world's second-largest carrier, received regulatory approval Monday to install wireless Internet access to its fleet in a partnership with Verizon Communications Inc.
The Federal Aviation Administration gave approval to United-parent UAL Corp. to install the cabin equipment necessary to provide wireless Internet connection to passengers and crew members on U.S. domestic flights. United becomes the first domestic airline to get FAA approval that allows passengers to surf the Internet while riding through the sky......

Has the TSA weighed in on this yet?

I don't think the TSA has any say in this matter. FWIW, Lufthansa and Singapore currently use Connextion by Boeing in a good number of their aircraft and have had it for the better part of the past year. So I don't see any problem with this going forward. Just another great move to differentiate your product from the others.

Anyone have any tech specs on the WiFi systems already in commercial air transport use?

If they are good enough for data transfer, can they send multimedia to individual seats without the need for expensive retrofits for electrical harnesses at each seat?

A WiFi network in the air would function like a normal ISP. Who wil be the provider, UAL or some third party?

Hmmm....

Wonder if we'll get it in the cockpit as well? This would mean not having to buy a newspaper anymore! That will make up for some of the pay cuts! 😛

(for the humor-challenged... I was just kidding.)

I believe SAS also has WiFi available. I was just talking to a guy who told me that he and his friend were crossing the Atlantic on seperate flights (one Lufthansa and one SAS) and they were able to IM each other as they crossed the ocean.

It's a bit latent, but you can use Connexion for VoIP calls. I've done it.

This is actually a positive development for UA. I know myself and many colleagues would happily schedule UA as opposed to another carrier if Wi-Fi is available inflight.

Great fro UAL. Its about time the US carriers got in on this. UAL will be taking some of our transcon pax with this service on the 75's unless AA goes for something similar, quickly.
