United Airlines to Add Asia Service, Cut JFK-Tokyo Service

CHICAGO (AP) -- United Airlines said Friday it will add 40 weekly flights to Asia over the next nine months, including new service between Washington and Tokyo.
Airlines have been focusing more on international routes recently, as those passengers typically are willing to pay higher fares. Airlines have been raising fares to cover soaring fuel costs.

Among United's additions will be a return to daily, nonstop San Francisco-Taipei service, expansion of San Francisco-Seoul service to year-round from seasonal and the addition of three more weekly San Francisco-Hong Kong flights.

The new Tokyo service from Washington Dulles International Airport will replace United's flights to the city from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.

United also said it will sell its New York-London route authority to Delta Air Lines for undisclosed terms. That deal still needs approval from the Department of Transportation.

Shares of United's parent, UAL Corp. fell 23 cents to $26.76 in morning trading on the Nasdaq.
