UAL, the parent company of United Airlines, plans to lay off 950 pilots, Reuters reported Monday, citing a company spokeswoman. UAL told Reuters it informed employees of the decision on Monday.
 
I'm so sorry to hear there will be 950 pilots furloughed. How many f/a's are expected to be furloughed?

1999, advice to future united airlines furloughed pilots if you have a 2009 date to be furloughed, I truly hope you enjoy the holidays with your family, not in a hotel on a overnight. If you do not feel fit to fly over the holidays due to stress, it is legal to take off. (not your hat, the trip you have.)

So far no one is furloughed. I think the first will be in September. UA hired about 300 pilots in 2007. So after the final notices go out in 2009, the last man standing will be a 2000-2001 hire.

ALPA is still negotiating to mitigate involuntary furloughs. Post 9/11 several hundred took some form of voluntary leave. We can anticipate at least 100 or so this time around. There may also be some early retirement offers. This would benefit the company especially in the case of senior 737 captains who take an early out, eliminating the need to retrain that pilot on different equipment.

Question. I have read your thoughts on the us airways america west merger. Now is the 2000 - 2001 hire last man standing a junior member on the seniority list or a senior member on the seniority list? You advocated 2004 hires to be senior to 1988 hires at us airways.

Now are your 2001 date of hire pilots senior or junior pilots to 2004 hires? It would be helpful to the flying public to explain this.

Also if the united pilots that are furloughed soon, in the event of a merger in uniteds future, should they expect to go below pilots that were hired in 2007 of your future merged airline partner?
 
United did not hire anyone after 9/11/01. So on the United seniority list your point is moot.

If you are implying a more hypothetical scenario of a future merger, while UA has pilots on furlough, then I'm sorry to disappoint you but it is my position (and that of ALPA's and most arbitrators) is consistent. That is to say that a pilot with an active flying position holds more relative seniority than one who is furloughed at the time of the merger. If UA were to merge with a group who has active pilots hired after 2001, then yes those pilots would be senior to any furloughed UA pilots on a combined seniority list.

Something you don't seem to grasp is that integrity is consistency in actions and not just words.

So to the 1000 pilots that are getting furloughed from united, your union "brother" 767jetz says you will go behind a pilot that united merges with in the future. Your 2000 hire date will put you below a 2009 plus hire in the airline you merge with in the future.

That idea makes WAY too much sense. Do you think any major airline management (other than WN, of course) would be able to stomach a course of action that logical?
