The article doesn't say it, but it seems likely they intend to fly this with US equipment. They were working on ETOPS, but it seems like a waste of time with 767s available to them. Maybe it will be a BA style wet-lease while the merger is finished.

America West to begin new Phoenix-Honolulu service
Monday July 11, 1:01 pm ET

America West Airlines will announce new service to Hawaii at a news conference Monday afternoon.
America West has offered Phoenix-Hawaii service through a code-share agreement with Hawaiian Airlines, but not on its own until now.

The new daily service is expected to be launched in time for this Christmas.

The Business Journal learned of the new service on Sunday and according to America West's Web site, round-trip coach seats from Phoenix to Honolulu are selling for about $700, and first class under $1,400, excluding taxes and airport fees.

Additional details are expected to be released by the airline at 1 p.m., Arizona time.

Tempe-based America West (NYSE: AWA - News) operates nearly 1,000 flights daily to more than 90 destinations in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Costa Rica. The airline has announced its plans to merge with Arlington, Va.-based US Airways Inc. (OTCBB: UAIRQ - News) with $1.5 billion in new capitalization lined up. The two airlines are awaiting approval from a bankruptcy court judge, America West shareholders, and regulatory approvals from the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Air Transportation Stabilization Board.

According to a friend at HP's HDQ, it will be flown with HP crews and HP 757s.

Personal opinion -- thinking this would be flown with US equipment and crews is wishful thinking, and I'd expect HP employees to see that as a potential shot across the bow with regard to how a fence would work in a post-merger environment....

To dispel any remaining doubts about the aircraft type to be used on America West's new PHX/LAS-Hawaii flights, see their press release (here) issued this afternoon that indicates 190-seat B757-200s (14F/176Y) will be used.

I don't know what you are talking about but there are no free 762's available. During the summer months they are all used to Europe and during the winter months they are all used on profitable caribbean routes. Anyway HP made their 752's ETOPS purely on the fact that they wanted to fly them to Hawaii.

Doesnt seem like a very comfortable ride for a long flight like that. You know those things are gonna be packed like sardines.... :)

Aloha flys a Next Generation Boeing 737 from the West Coast to the Hawaiian Islands.

It's only a five-six hour flight. Destination-Paradise!

If you want to see how it was done in the fifties, check out AMC Classic Movie Channel on Sunday night. The classic airliner disaster film, "The High and the Mighty", starring John Wayne, will be televised for the first time in more than a decade. It was tied up in litigation along with another aviation classic, "Island in the Sky", also starring the Duke(NOT CUNNINGHAM!)

Now that was flying!

Can you name one airplane that's comfortable in coach class when it's packed?

I wonder if rebublic will re-configure the a/c with FC an Y seating to match up the fleet with those on the UA Express side of their operations?

They also had problems finding the original print. Eventually, they found a decent copy and digitally enhanced it. Look for it for sale sometime later in the month.

Just wondering...Isnt AWA going to be no more come October when it will be all the new Usairways. I was told they will comepletely lose their name imediatly after everything is signed and dotted. The name America West will be noomore on paper nor on the a/c's once they are all repainted. True? Anyone? So, technically it will be U flying to Hnl...but, with the phx based new U crew. Right?
