Us Airways Applies For Codeshare With Bmi

Star Alliance members US Airways and BMI have applied with the DOT for codeshare authority. The docket is at http://dms.dot.gov/search/document.cfm?doc...&docketid=18932.

US Airways currently codeshares with Star Alliance partners Lufthansa, Spanair, and United, as well as additional partners in the Caribbean.

Initial routes:

US code on BD flights:
MAN-ABZ/EDI/GLA/TLS
CDG-LBA

BD code on US (and Piedmont/PSA) flights:
PHL-GLA/LGW/MAN
CLT-LGW
PHL/CLT-BOS/BWI/CLE/MCI/PIT/RDU/RSW/STL
PHL-CLT
CLT-EWR

This (along with many other STAR carriers) should've been done long ago. We'll see if benefits ever come to be.

I agree, particularly Air Canada.

From the Hub:

US Airways and bmi

As part of development plans for this fall, US Airways and bmi filed a request with the Department of Transportation to operate codeshare flights in the United States and in the United Kingdom and points beyond. As stated in the joint application, US Airways and bmi seek “to more effectively compete by offering better and more fully integrated services to their respective customers.â€￾ If approved, US Airways and bmi hope to begin operating the proposed codeshare flights as early as October.

looks like someone is being very aggressive in expanding where they can.... great to seee........

Continental has objected to the portion of the application involving London routes, saying that this portion is an extralegal extension of Bermuda II and reminding the DOT that the London portion of the UAL/BMI application was stricken pending the opening of London airports to US applicants.

Continental's just being a big baby. This is not analagous to UA/BD. UA/BD wanted to codeshare into LHR. US/BD want to codeshare into LGW.

Oh, and btw, CO already has its own extrabilateral authority that lets them codeshare into LHR. Guess they forgot to mention that.

Does US have any plans (assuming they survive longer than the rest of this month) to approach a Star member about transatlantic Anti-trust immunity? LH/UA and NW/KL have such immunity (I'm not sure about DL/AF) and said immunity could reduce some costs. LH is probably out of the running since they already have immunity with UA. That leaves BD, SK, OS, LO, JK, TAP and Blue1. Blue1 and JK don't fly transatlantic so they are out. TAP wouldn't make much sense. That leaves SK, BD, OS and LO. LOT only flies to ORD and NYC from WAW, and WAW isn't exactly a prime destination, so eliminate LOT. BD, OS and SK. SK flys into SEA, ORD, EWR and IAD from CPH and also STO-ORD/EWR (IIRC) and sometimes a seasonal OSL-EWR. OS flys VIE-YTO/NYC/IAD. BD flys MAN-ORD/IAD.
Of those Star hubs, the only one US already flys to is MAN. Since SK is the biggest airline of those 3, and since US already flies to BD's hub, we can eliminate OS and decide it between SK and BD.

PHL-OSL can probably work for either SK or US; I wonder if they could support a BOS flight or a CLT flight. Same goes for MAN, could CLT or BOS support a MAN flight? (AA flies BOS-MAN with a 757)
I'd go with SK, with US adding PHL-OSL and SK adding BOS-OSL. Then all of US' key cities (BOS, NYC, PHL and WAS) have a nonstop flight. SK can easily pick up the fare setting westbound and US can do the same eastbound. The two airlines could feed each other quite well and would increase each others efficiences as well as those of the alliance as a whole. So will US approach any of these carriers for anti-trust immunity?

I wondered about that VS deal. Anyway, we'll have to wait and see what the DOT says. There are other codeshares for flights beyond LGW.

FYI, BMI does NOT serve LGW. The only Star carriers that do are US, OS (Austrian) and LO (LOT).

Does the application maybe include the right to offer flights in/out LGW on US metal connecting to/from LHR on BD metal? Many BA conx are shown in the computer via London this way. Have to be careful when rerouting or else include the change for the bus on the reroute.

The text of the application is linked to the first post in this thread, if you want to rerad the actual text. Among other routes, the application requests authority to put the BD code on US's LGW-PHL/CLT flights

The DOT partially granted US and BMI codeshare authority.

The DOT deferred action on codesharing to LGW.

For reasons I don't understand, the DOT also deferred action on codesharing to ABZ/LBA/TLS.

(When dealing with the DOT, "deferred" is most often a codeword for "denied".)

The rest of the application was approved.
