US Airways' Employees Unite, Warn Management to Dump Anti-Labor Tactics
Wednesday January 23, 8:30 am ET

PHOENIX, Jan. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- For the first time in the history of the new US Airways (NYSE: LCC - News), labor groups representing approximately 30,000 union members at the airline have joined together in a coalition to demand that management complete the merger that began nearly three years ago. Specifically, management needs to adhere to current labor contracts and reach new collective bargaining agreements that improve the wages, benefits and working conditions of US Airways employees. The following is a statement from the newly formed US Airways Labor Coalition, which includes the union leaders for the pilots, flight attendants, customer service representatives, dispatchers, fleet service workers, mechanics, and all other labor groups at US Airways.

"US Airways management failed to work with labor from the beginning of this merger and has continued this practice for nearly three years, leading us to where we are now-a once promising airline with a plummeting stock price, consistent rankings at the bottom of the industry, and disgruntled employees. Instead of addressing the myriad of problems, management has done nothing but issue excuses to our investors, passengers and employees. The lack of leadership and know-how displayed by this management team is appalling and has forced us to take action.

"US Airways employees want to complete this merger, take advantage of the cost-saving synergies that it created, and live up to the expectations that management promised us, our investors and our passengers. The US Airways Labor Coalition will help us achieve our goals by creating a strong, unified voice for labor that management cannot ignore.

"With so much talk of future airline consolidation, we urge management teams across the industry to learn from the mistakes of US Airways' management and work with labor before, during and after the merger process. We have also put our own management team on notice that if they plan to participate in a future transaction, they must throw out their anti-labor tactics and work with us to succeed."

The US Airways Labor Coalition represents approximately 30,000 employees from the two merged carriers- America West and US Airways. The pilots are represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int'l. (ALPA). The flight attendants are represented by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA- CWA). The customer service representatives are represented by the Airline Customer Service Employee Association-IBT/CWA. The fleet service, mechanic and related, and maintenance training specialist employees are represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM). The dispatchers, flight crew training instructors and simulator engineers are represented by the Transport Workers Union of America (TWU).

My hats off to all the employees. There is strength in numbers.
Time to let the public, investors and board of directors know where the ineptitude is.

While I can't argue with the letter, it is just more of the same....talk. Boss Canale will come out of negotiations singing how the 'environment has changed' and offer a contract with more IOU's, putrid wage, and 'drop dead' station closing language.

This letter is meaningless. Ask united. Randy sold them out after writing goofy letters to the press, and then United rewarded the investors $250 million, and Randy blew more smoke about how the company continues to screw over workers.....yet he agreed to it in writing.

Bottom line, Canale needs to ask hemmingway for the same COC language that protects Parker instead of language found at the bottom of a 'cracker jack box'. He needs to remind Hemminghaw about all the new VP's, new officer contracts, industry standard wages and benefits, and 3.5 billion.

It isn't going to happen though because Canale is Canale. He's management and always has been.

I can't speak to whoever represents the mechanics, pilots, stews.

Talk is cheap , and it's growing cheaper by the day , ACTIONS speak louder than words . If we want this company to finally hear us we will need ACTION .As a fleet service worker we have given this company MORE than enough of our lives to get it’s act together and get everything straightened out … The clock is ticking sandcastle , can you hear it ? …… times running out fast , there’s isn’t much of it left …..

So this was from the IAM or was this from a team of reps from all the work groups? What makes you think Canale would ever ask Hemmingway for anything? I don't see the company offering the same protection to the employees that they offer the executives. I don't see the company doing anything that remotely resembles taking care of the employees - and the union has no such intention, doesn't help their cause at all. So where does that leave us?

it leaves us right out on the streets with no protection as has been the way the union and the company wants it and the way canale bird likes it

Here's the problem with this press release, and with the unions at US.

Did ANY of these S*B's make one scintilla of an effort to develop ANY solidarity with the membership they purport to represent and collect dues from?

Did they involve the employees? Ask them what they thought?

Of course not, and that's why they all got their a$$e$ handed to them by Glass and Crellin.

This press release does have value. You can print it out and store it in the WC as a backup.

Crellin was not in Negotiations.

And the reason was in the M&R is that the we could never reach an agreement, because the company wanted to layoff 50% of the mtc workforce.

We had presented the company with a complete contract that met the ask minus the pension termination as we would never agree to that and we knew rubber stamp Mitchell would give them that anyhow.

If you want to see a copy of the proposal shoot me a PM and I will send you it.

Funny,

No talks of this Coalition at union meetings or on the property. Not even a website dedicated to give the 30,000 members needed information can be found. Except for a press release, all I can find is a page on tha ALPA website to give credibility. Only ALPA and CWA are represented by contacts! Come on IAM, step up and get real leadership and quit being a paper tiger!

While I think your thoughts are reasonable on what your company sez it will allow, they still can not be tolerated. The present COC language is meaningless so it must be rewritten in the face of the upcoming mergers this year.

Instead of thinking 'what the company will allow', the masses should think what would the masses allow. Allowing your company to bring back 'piss clam' COC language in the midst of mergers is unacceptable. If this presents a game of 'tic tac toe' where nobody wins then so be it and wait till 2009. In the meantime your company will not be able to 'take' the transition away from fleet service without a TA. Remember, your company is at the table because it needs to take transition from fleet and M & R. And unless your company offers fairness, fleet service isn't the $20 whore that will give the transition up like your company thinks it is.

Section 6's are a huge 'must' for the west as they will keep the company accountable through due process, but unfortunately the west has not been solid enough to rise up against the IAM to file a DFR or pursuade DL141 and DL143 from doing their fiduciary duties. The IAM has continuously 'hoodwinked' the west, and the west [both fleet and M & R] have not done any action against the IAM to prevent furthering the violation.

Regarding fleet. If anyone has the integrity to file a DFR, I will walk you through it and file it in ORD for you. It must be filed in ORD since that is where 141 is located.

regards,
