I find it insulting that they blame this on 9/11! The performance of this airline has nothing to do with 9/11 it is merely an excuse.

Agreed, but most every Airline used that as an excuse/tool to eliminate thousands of jobs and to impose massive wage and benefit cuts. I can'r say that 9/11 didn't worsen matters, but this Airline was in trouble long before that date. A couple of Airlines made their way around the 9/11 tragedy without screwing their worforce to death along the way. Our CEO's always managed to line their pockets regardless how bad things were in the industry.

After reading that article it really made me question peoples decisions. Why in HELL would you want to put yourself through that kind of life for THIS job. Granted jobs are not easy to come by. Also granted that most senior f/a's will NEVER make the kind of dough doing another job. What I'm talking about is those that are in the oh say 12 year and lower range. Why would you spend your life aimlessly staring at monitors in the airport hoping for miracles to get to and from work? The company treats you like crap and you have to rely on another airline to get you to work. I know ya do whatcha gotta do but really. Add the cost of food on the road, your crashpad and all the other expenses of travel and how much are you REALLY raking in a year? Not much to "see the world" as a flight attendant. It's sad. I wonder what is going to come of this commute between PIT-PHL. It's bad now.....can it get worse?

As long as there is Southwest (first come) it will be marginal. Take that away..........and we are SCREWED!

I read it is Dan Fitzpatrick, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, who is claiming the affects of 9/11? I didn't read the writing quoting a US Airways representative claiming affects of 9/11.

"While no longer counted in the official payrolls of the southwestern Pennsylvania economy, this semi-invisible work force of at least 1,000 migratory US Airways employees is helping to mitigate the impact of thousands of airline-related job losses suffered in this region since the attacks of 9/11, even as US Airways' local employee base officially drops to 1,800 this year, down from more than 12,000 prior to 9/11."

The performance of the airline wasn't good before 9/11, either. It seemed to monopolize many smaller hubs and pax felt they were at the mercy of an airline that didn't give a rat's butt about their problems and concerns. Let alone that their prices were skyhigh as compared to other nearby airports. The bed was made and US Air infuriated many, many people who have not forgotten.

When the person in charge of US operations at a certain airport wrote a letter justifying the prices to a local newspaper, the opposition letters started coming in full force. And they weren't too pretty. This was circa 1998. Of course the salary of employees came into play.

Ground crews were making $18-28/hour before 2000. At or about 2000(maybe 1999) aspiring ground crews were told they would start at about $8. After 9/11 most of these people lost their jobs. Surprisingly this was with all major airlines not just US Air.

Today it seems that although US should be admired for trying to clean-up it's image, many think 'too little, too late!' Where it once had a large number of gates, it seems like the competitions are starting to move in.
