Usairways Post 1st Quarter Loss

US AIRWAYS
GOING OUT OF BUSINESS SINCE 1928

That's FUNNY! There's probably a whole thread to be had posting some of the more snide and cynical remarks about US from it's Customers and Employees. I was always partial to these two:

US Airways, We love to fly where it snows

At US Airways we're not happy until you're not happy.

But hey let's rejoice in the fact the news was pretty good

I hope PHX can rise up and add more to the bottom line. Hawaii, Mexico and Canada are nice, but they in no way support this company in the way Philadelphia does with it's east coast catchment ability, even with the challenges of the once in a lifetime winter that we just had.
Weather is unpredictable so don't count it out... PHXs bottom line will no doubt increase with the proposed NRT route within the next 2 years

I love your optimism, but given our last ill-fated foray into the far east I doubt PHX-NRT will be any more successful than PHL-PEK. And we remember the travesty that was Phoenix=Nagoya, Japan.

To be fair, Nagoya has never been able to support many flights to the U.S. - I don't think they even have a nonstop to the West Coast - and Phoenix-Nagoya commenced during the traffic slump following the Gulf War (similarly, PHL-PEK was slated to commence during the traffic slump following the oil spike/financial meltdown in 2008. Hmm...). It was a weak market to begin with and economic conditions couldn't have been worse. However, unlike Nagoya, Narita offers a number of connections beyond Japan as well an advantage in relative proximity to Tokyo. Phoenix does have a sizable Asian population that can provide a bit of VFR traffic, much more than SLC at least (which somehow gets away with seasonal NRT service), so I think the chances of this route succeeding are much higher than any previous attempt this company has made to serve Asia.

To be fair, it was PHX-HNL-NGO and the majority of traffic was in and out of HNL. But, we started it the week of the gulf war, and the Japanese government came out with a travel advisory not to fly on american carriers. That being said, the aging 747-200 was too much of a plane for the route and NGO was not a big enough city to fill the plane. We sold the route to NW and they operated it for a few years with a DC-10.

Tokyo is a much better destination, and with the right plane and connection times and cargo contracts, it can be a winner.

You've been prognosticating the demise of the airline for several years now and you have been wrong every time. Shut it, already.

no ....

i was also prognoasticating the demise of the US economy too .... remember how when our union was in contract talks i pushed REALLY REALLY hard to have us vote yes because i was afraid of bad things happening to the economy ? well now when jobs anywhere are annouced there really ARE lines that streach all the way around the block ...

now of course if we MERGE with another company that changes my prediction .. but if we remain a standalone ..nah i don't see good things in our future ...

oh , and for the record , i also don't see good things for the future of the us economy either ... it's like that old time song "the best is yet to come "

; )

So the US economy is going to crash soon eventually? You realize there's a statute of limitation on I-told-you-so's right?

I predict a Q2 profit of $12.00

Yes, twelve dollars.

And still we made it through the rain. Just like Barry.

If I want prognostication on our economy, I will turn to CNBC. I will come to you when I decide to have dreadlocks. Wonder how they will look on my balding head.

Usairways posted a small loss compared to last year...
