Worried about germs on the plane? Try wasabi.
Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines Inc. will soon replace its current soap with a cleanser that draws on the natural antibacterial properties of the spicy Japanese horseradish.
The wasabi-lemongrass hand wash by Lather will be offered in aircraft lavatories, Crown Room Clubs and retail locations starting in February. The company's products will also be included in business class amenity kits on international flights.
Lather, based in Pasadena, Calif., says its wasabi-based cleanser is a natural alternative to synthetic antibacterial soaps, which have recently drawn ire for their possible role in encouraging the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Lather commissioned a recent survey that showed that 62 percent of participants were concerned about germs on crowded airplanes.
The survey of 3,400 people by Harris Interactive showed that 55 percent of men and 69 percent of women take precautions during air travel such as washing hands frequently, drinking water, taking vitamins or using hand sanitizers.
