The M & E base is pretty much shut down. Supervisor says stay home til tomorrow. Enjoy the beach while we play in the snow.

What now? Will they force you guys to take a VC day, or do you have to make it up on the weekend? Maybe local 514 will supplement that day with the millions in dues money they have stashed away collecting interest, for what?

I suppose anybody can go to work if they dare. I don't think many are as few neighborhoods have been plowed yet.

The Travel Emergency policy states: "6) Based on supervisory approval and operational needs and subject to contractual guidelines in the case of TWU represented employees, employees may protect unpaid lost time by using VC, PV, or Comp Time, if eligible. Employees may also be given the opportunity to work additional hours at straight time rate, if appropriate."

"Transportation Emergency

Yesterday, Vice President Base Maintenance William Collins declared a Transportation Emergency for the Tulsa Maintenance and Engineering Center. Due to severe weather conditions, the Transportation Emergency policy, which was placed into effect at 0500 hours on Tuesday, February 1, 2011, will be extended until further notice. The weather and conditions around the base will be re-examined at 0900 hours today, February 3, 2011. In reference to Item (5), the Tulsa Base remains open and management is not directing employees to leave early."

The last sentence is not correct:
What did happen is that employees were sent home on Tuesday mid morning, and employees were turned around at the gate and sent home (unless they were stores, facility maint,or moc) and were told the base was closed. This happened all day and night Tuesday.
Is someone trying to avoid paying people for sending them home or turning them around at the gate Tuesday?

I heard a guy called in sick Tuesday. Wonder if that will wash? 😛

The question of the day is, can the Tulsa base be "closed"? Tuesday, some were turned away at the gate, some were texted by supervision the base was closed, and some who were called in early for O.T. by supervision were called again and told don't come to work the base was closed. Anyone have an answer?

Common answer to issues like this one....

"THEY CAN DO THAT, BROTHER"

If the base was closed and people were turned away they should be paid, the company has an obligation to provide us 40 hours a week and if they change the days they must give us seven days notice.. I would file a grievance, I'm sure there are TV cameras at the gate so it would be easy to prove.

I don't think the Tulsa base was officially closed. This is what our local sent out:

February 2, 2011 – UPDATE From 1000

Transportation Emergency

(FOR TULSA MAINTENANCE BASE EMPLOYEES ONLY)

Yesterday, Vice President Base Maintenance William Collins declared a Transportation Emergency for the Tulsa Maintenance and Engineering Center. Due to severe weather conditions, the Transportation Emergency policy, which was placed into effect at 0500 hours on Tuesday, February 1, 2011, will be extended until further notice. Some outside media sources have reported that the base was closed. These reports were incorrect and not based upon any information provided to them by American Airlines Maintenance & Engineering. The base continues to be open and has been open since the start of the Transportation Emergency.
