AMR Corp. said it earned $15 million, or six cents per share, in the quarter ended Sept. 30, compared to a loss of $153 million, or 93 cents per share, a year earlier. Revenue rose 6.6 percent to $5.85 billion.

The profit figure included a $99 million charge to reduce the value of fuel-hedging contracts. Without that expense, AMR said it would have earned $114 million, or 45 cents per share.

Being in the black is always good, but a $15M profit comes out to $166K of profit per day, or approximately $41 for every flight operated, so fuel obviously hurt.

Over the course of the year, it's a much better picture -- the daily profit average appears to be $790K, or about $198 per flight. Just get another body or two on each flight, and the profit will double.
