"I'm reminded of the time that Catherine - one of Shannon's friends when she was little - told me that she wanted to be President one day.

Both of her parents, liberal democrats, were standing there with us - and I asked Catherine - "If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?"

Catherine replied - "I would give houses to all the homeless people."

"Wow - what a worthy goal you have there Catherine." I told her, "You don't have to wait until you're President to do that, you can come over to my house and clean up all the dog poop in the back yard and I will pay you $5 dollars. Then we can go over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $5 dollars to use for a new house."

Catherine (who was about 4) thought that over for a second, while her mom looked at me seething, and Catherine replied, "Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and clean up the dog poop and you can pay him the $5 dollars?!"

Welcome to the Republican Party, Catherine."

You're so right... why our government even sponsored a 30 billion dollar bailout to a Wall Street investment firm.

Had the government and JP Morgan allowed Bear Stearns to file for bankruptcy, the government would have been on the hook for all the assets that were fed insured anyways. Thus, regardless of the outcome, our taxes were going to be on the line... at least with this decision, they hopefully prevented an enormous backlash that could have occured. Moreover, while many in the press call it a "bailout," it really is a loan with interest. Even if JP Morgan defaults on the loan (which many see as unlikely), the loan's collateral has some value to the fed (although it is not likely the full $29b on the line because it is backed by mortgage-backed securities).

In an attempt to relate it to the "poop story" above, JP morgan agreed to clean up the dog poop (Bear Stearns) and take the $5 ($30 billion, to be paid back w/ interest) in order to build its house (a stronger bank).

That is called SOCIALISM. A government hand out is a government handout no matter who gets it.
Of course when the banking/business elite benefit from this SOCIALISM it is good. When the people benefit from Socialism, then its bad!
I love how the so called conservatives trip over each other to defend this. Bunch of hypocrites!

Heard Hillary is jealous about Bill's little "hide the cigar" party with the monica, perhaps you could give her some "cuban" smoke!!!
The only smoke is comming out of your....ears as you toil away to come up with your clever retorts. How do you do it Heinrich?
The whole Monica sham was just a smoke screan to cover up Clinton's other criminal activities. It was clever smoke and mirrors, slight of hand and the sheeple fell for it.
Not to bash gays, but at least Clinton "did not have sexual realtions" with a woman; and the democrats that are gay are open about it. How is it that these so called christian conservative, family values type republicans have an afinity for male prostitutes and bathroom stalls?
GOTT MIT UNS! Right Heinrich?

But it was the Bush administration who bailed out Bear Stearns. Last I checked...they weren't democrats. I read somewhere that everybody is a capitalist....until they find themselves in trouble, then they'd really like a "socialist" program to bail them out.

While many want to blame the subprime mess on "deadbeats" who are just looking for a "government hand out", the local KDC paper had an article a few weeks ago about the troubles of folks who bought a $1.5 million home (for those keeping score in other parts of the nation, a million and a half buys a LOT of house in Kansas City) and who could no longer make the payments...and found that they could only get a million if they tried to sell. You can bet your bottom dollar that those folks were most likely very good capitalists...good republicans too...but they want someone to bail them out of their mess.

If you don't like Socialism for the masses, then you'd best oppose the socialist policies that REPUBLICANS seem to have for corporations.

Truth be known, it was the socialist policies of FDR and the New Deal that kept this country from becoming a socialist nation. FDR saved the capitalists from themselves. It was also the socialist policies of the Marshall Plan that reinvigorated western Europe and kept them out of the Soviet sphere.
Politicians will use Socialism any chance they get to save the hide of their corporate masters.

"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy. Its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."
-- Winston Churchill
