Amtrak halts its backup service: Can't fill Acela's Boston-N.Y. gap

A few quotes from the article:

Already travelers are making alternative plans with airlines and bus companies. US Airways and Delta Air Lines said bookings are up sharply on their shuttle flights and bus companies are seeing double-digit increases in travelers.

Garber Travel in Boston is rebooking hundreds of displaced Acela customers on US Airways shuttles and plans to do so for the forseeable future.

''People are very upset to find out that all the Acela trains had a problem," said Joan Kaplan, executive vice president of Garber Travel. ''There's been enough incidents with Acela that this will put people back in the air."

US Airways, which operates hourly shuttles out of Logan International Airport to New York and Washington, has seen significant increases in the New York and Washington markets since Friday. Amy Kudwa, a US Airways spokeswoman, declined comment on whether there was a boost in the number of Boston passengers during the same period because of the influx of travelers for yesterday's Boston Marathon.

Edit: Just so I don't look like a total goober, the problems with the Acela are due to cracks in the brake rotors...brake...break... :)

That's better news than one of the other articles I read.....

" The Acela's absence was a boon to at least one airline that operates a New York shuttle. Delta Air Lines carried 10 percent more shuttle passengers on Friday, compared with Friday a week earlier, said Delta spokeswoman Benet J. Wilson.

US Airways spokesman David A. Castelveter said the airline saw a "slight uptick" in shuttle passenger loads yesterday and Friday, but he was unable to determine whether that was due to the Acela."
