In May of 2000, the proposed UAL/U merger was met with trepidation from the other airlines, and the government.

In December of 2000, the GAO posted a negative view on the merger. In the spring, there was a hearing on the deal, and all of the airlines chimed in. An airline CEO referred to the deal as the "cartel". Shortly afterward, UAL pulled out after they discovered that the deal WAS going to be approved.

My point is that even under more restrictive times, the UAL deal was probably going to be largely approved. SO will this deal, with some obvious divestitures.

The creditors?
