“We are not sugar-coating the magnitude of what we, along with every other airline, are up against today in this economic climate,â€￾ Gerard Arpey, American’s chief executive, said on Thursday.

Boeing noted that demand for new aircraft “remains strong,â€￾ as airlines seek to replace ageing fleets with more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly aeroplanes. American also announced plans to take delivery of eight additional Boeing 737-800s. The carrier plans to receive 76 737s by the end of 2010.

Key points from airlines' conference with investors


American will step up its plan to replace its aging McDonnell Douglas MD-80 jets. It now plans to acquire 31 Boeing 737-800 jets in 2009, up from 29. In 2010, it will acquire 45 of the jets, up from 39.
