Airlines and unions unite over pensions

Four US airlines on Monday joined forces with unions to call on Congress to approve new pension legislation before the end of the year to ease the financial burden on an industry where more than half of domestic capacity is provided by companies in bankruptcy protection.

The carriers – American, Continental, Delta and Northwest– are lobbying hard to preserve the aviation-specific elements of a pension reform package approved last month by the US Senate. However, the proposed benefits are absent from proposals due to before the House, as well as the broader reform package proposed by the White House which aims to beef up the contributions companies make to their pension schemes.
