Alaska Announces Large Job Cuts

That's got to be disappointing, esp. for the mechanics. I'm not convinced that total contract maintenance is really in the best interest of any airline, esp. one with a fleet of over 100 a/c between AS and Horizon. This certainly will impact AS' otherwise excellent customer service, although most of the cuts are in non-public contact positions.

All the best to the folks at Alaska. You still are one of the industry's success stories.

They're not doing total contract maintenance. Only the heavy check maintenance base at OAK is affected. And the auto mechs who service the ground support equipment.

Most AS mechanics are not covered by the layoff.

Ten years from now the Newest Greatest Idea will be to bring it all in-house for greater efficiency and cost control.......................................again.

(I've gotta stop reading old trade magazines. Next I'll be correcting folks that airline regulation did not garrantee profits and several airlines posted losses under the CAB, contrary to popular history beliefs.)

Did the AS a/c mechanics get let go that night or is there a closing date for the hangar? I wonder if AS would try to sell the hangar to SWA since they habe a large presence in OAK. Just my thought........ my heart goes out to al those who did or are about to lose their jobs

Alaska mechanics were escorted off the property immediately upon learning of the cuts and none were allowed back on the property.
