Alaska Air Had $786M Cash On Oct. 31

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

WASHINGTON -- Alaska Air Group Inc. (ALK) had cash and short-term investments of $786 million on Oct. 31, according to a Form 8-K filed Tuesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The company said it had cash and short-term investments of $748 million on Sept. 30. Alaska Air said the increase of $38 million is mainly due to cash generated from operations.

Elsewhere in the filing, Alaska Air said that during November and December, its Horizon Air unit will complete the transition needed to begin regional jet service as Frontier JetExpress on Jan. 1, 2004.

These preparations are expected to cause a decrease in capacity levels and an increase in cost per available seat mile excluding fuel during the fourth quarter, compared with 2002 levels.

Alaska Air is the holding company for Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air.
