American Eagle will be hiring approximately 400 Flight Attendants ( one class per month) through June 2004.

Minimum Age: 19

Education/Work Experience: High school diploma or GED, plus at least one year of customer service experience.


Citizenship: United States citizenship or if you possess the legal right to work in the U.S., including the right to travel to/from the countries American Eagle serves.


Relocation: Candidates must be willing and able to relocate to any of our flight attendant bases located in Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Dallas/Fort Worth, TX; Los Angeles, CA; Miami, FL; New York City (LGA), NY or San Juan, Puerto Rico.


Physical Requirements: You must be able to lift, push and pull heavy articles as required. You must be able to reach all emergency equipment on all aircraft types. All flight attendants are required to be between 5 feet and 5 feet 10 inches.


Training: Those selected for training must attend an unpaid four week training program conducted at American Airlines Training and Conference Center in Dallas/Fort Worth. Accommodations and meals are provided. Trainees will be responsible for incidental expenses incurred during training and for relocation to the assigned base. Base assignments are awarded in order of seniority. Seniority within each class is determined by birth date.


Uniforms: Initial uniforms are issued during training and purchased by new hire flight attendants via payroll deduction at a rate of $20.00 per paycheck.


Company Benefits: After 6 months of service, new flight attendants will be eligible for our full benefits package. This includes: health insurance, life insurance, dental insurance and profit sharing. Unlimited (space available) travel privileges for employee, spouse and children will be given after completion of training and 24 one-way travel passes each year for family and friends after two years of service. A 401(k) plan and credit union membership are available for those who wish to join.


Salary: All flight attendant wages are governed by the contract agreed upon between American Eagle and the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) and are competitive with other major airlines. Annual increases are based on Company anniversary dates as specified in the contract. Per diem is paid for each hour a flight attendant is away from home base. Hotels on layovers are provided by American Eagle.

To paraphrase Pres. Clinton, "Define good company to work for." It's owned by AMR corporation as is AA. If you are looking for management that does not view you as the enemy and sees its job as doing what is necessary to support the f/a's, AE is not for you.

The lines are not bad, but junior manning is prevalent in some bases.

Pay: The contract is in negotiation now (has been since 2001). In fact, AE management has just requested mediation. Current pay is $17.67/hr to start. Pay remains the same for the first 4 YEARS. Contractually, the starting pay is supposed to be $12-something/hr. Company could not attract decent candidates at that pay rate. They made a side agreement with the union to raise the pay rate as necessary to attract good candidates with the understanding that people hired at a higher pay rate would remain at that rate until they reached the anniversary that would entitle them to something higher. The $17/hr rate is the 4th year rate in the current contract.

My friend, a former 5 yr AE f/a, who insists on putting in her 2 cents says, "For the 5 years that I was there, I made some great friends and leaned a lot about being a flight attendant. As someone who enjoys flying and being the only f/a on the aircraft or someone who wants to get experience until the majors are hiring again, it's a good job and company. ;) But, remember when you're on reserve and good for 6 days, you need to pack for 6 days because crew scheduling will not hesitate to use and re-use you without allowing you time to go home and get clean clothes. The best advice I can give someone is know your contract and know your work rules. If you know your work rules and contract, your life will be much better. Have fun flying."
