In my years working at airports, whether ticket counter or ramp, I always made a habit of checking the security of the bolts holding the top to the bottom of the kennel crates. If I had a nickel for every loose bolt I found...
Almost without fail, I saw counter and agents and rampers always doing a great job and taking good care of animals being shipped. I did see one minor mishap, with no harm to the critter. A crate was dropped from the side runner of a stationary belt loader. It gave everyone a scare.
But mishaps do occur; as the the petflight.com site shows. One sad case was dog who injured himself trying to escape from the crate. No mishandling my anyone, just a very scared dog.
Pet Airways, while pricey and slow is an option, but they only serve a few locations.
