Good for Delta

Good for Delta. Hopefully, all other carriers will follow suit if in-flight cell phone use is ever allowed. What an annoyance it will be if carriers allow in-flight cell phone use.

If youve been losing sleep over the prospect that airplanes may soon become crucibles of nonstop chatter once federal regulators allow in-flight phone calls, theres new reason to relax: Delta Air Lines (DAL) has forcefully emphasized its opposition to calls and reassured employees today that it will continue banning the practice even if it permits texting and Web surfing.

Even as technology advances and as regulations are changed, we will not only consider what we can do, but as importantly we will also consider what is right for our customers and our employees, Deltas chief executive, Richard Anderson, wrote in a memo to the companys 80,000 workers. This is yet another example of how we continue to have your back and how we also rely on your professionalism and experience to guide our actions and decisions. Anderson cited a 2012 survey in which the company found that passengers considered phone calls a detraction from their flight experience. Delta also received negative responses from cabin crews.

WN came out and said the same thing. Despite the fact that other countries have airlines that allow it, this might mean that the US will march to a different drummer on yet one more issue.

I suspect that the number of airlines at a global level who allow voice calls will be far fewer than those who allow it.

The reality is that unless you have an access point to enhance signal strength high enough, keeping the signal will be a huge challenge, and even there, it's going to be tough.

SMS doesn't need to hold a connection for more than a second or so, which is why SMS kept working during 9/11 and voice calls didn't, and why a phone left on inflight today will continue to get SMS messages if the signal is strong enough long enough.

Same here.

I've yet to run into anyone- DL employee or not- who thinks allowing calls would be a good idea. Most reactions range from "hell no" to goofy reenactments of people using the Airfones when they first came out ("Dude! Guess where I'm calling you from?")...
